What is a remote RPG programmer?

Remote RPG Programmers are software developers who specialize in using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, typically for IBM i (AS/400) systems, and perform their work from a remote location rather than an onsite office. Their responsibilities often include developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with teams via digital communication tools. Working remotely allows these professionals to serve clients or employers worldwide, providing flexibility while leveraging their expertise in legacy and modern RPG codebases.

What does a remote RPG programmer do?

A remote RPG programmer works in software development, creating new applications or tools using the report program generator language, which was originally designed for the IBM minicomputer system on the AS/400 and i-Series of computers. RPG is one of the most frequently used programming languages, and significant amounts of business enterprise, infrastructure operations, and other essential system controls use it. As a remote RPG programmer, you work from home as part of a larger team of developers, building web and windows applications. Your duties and responsibilities include scripting tests, checking code, and building out programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote RPG programmer?

To thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, you need strong proficiency in RPG (Report Program Generator) language, experience with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or programming. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer, CL programming, and database management systems such as DB2 is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving ability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills, especially for remote work environments. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintenance, and troubleshooting of business-critical applications while enabling collaboration and independence in a distributed team.

What are some unique challenges faced by remote RPG programmers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Remote RPG Programmers often work with designers, artists, and other developers who may be located in different time zones, which can make real-time communication and collaboration challenging. Effective use of project management tools, clear documentation, and regular virtual meetings are essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on game features and technical requirements. Additionally, maintaining code consistency and integrating various modules smoothly require strong version control practices. Being proactive in communication and adaptable to different workflows helps overcome these challenges and ensures successful project delivery.

The Role

We are looking for a highly skilled and passionate Senior Software Engineer to step into a key role on our Software Engineering - Integrations team.

As a Senior Engineer, you won't just be writing code-you will be a vital technical voice and project leader. You will bridge the gap between business needs and complex data systems, partnering closely with both technical and non-technical teammates to define requirements. You will take the lead in designing rock-solid data pipelines and building impactful internal tools that empower our colleagues and deliver seamless experiences to our clients.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Architecting Data Solutions: Lead the design and development of robust, scalable ETL processes using Python and Airflow to power our core platform.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as a technical partner, collaborating directly with technical peers and non-technical stakeholders to unpack business requirements and translate them into elegant, scalable software solutions.
  • Building Impactful Tools: Architect and build intuitive internal tools that streamline workflows, support our colleagues, and directly benefit our clients.
  • Leading the Charge: Operate with a high degree of self-sufficiency, taking ownership of small projects and managing/mentoring pods of 1-2 other engineers to drive initiatives across the finish line.
  • Driving Technical Excellence: Champion best practices in software design, mentor those around you, and ensure our integration architecture is reliable, efficient, and built for the future.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Experience: 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with a proven track record of delivering complex projects.
  • Python & Design Mastery: You are highly proficient in Python and possess strong system design skills-you know how to build software that scales and lasts.
  • Database Expertise: You have a deep, practical understanding of relational databases, schema design, and performance optimization.
  • AI Curiosity: You are comfortable with AI development and have an eager desire to learn, explore, and push the boundaries of how we can leverage new AI technologies.
  • A Collaborative Spirit: You are highly organized, self-reliant, and an excellent communicator with experience breaking down project scopes for non-technical colleagues and brainstorming with fellow engineers.
  • Our Core Values: You are innovative in your problem-solving, courageous in bringing new ideas to the table, accountable for your team's success, transparent in your communication, impactful in your delivery, and above all, genuinely human in how you treat others.

Huge Pluses (Bonus Points!)

  • Advanced data wrangling skills using pandas or polars.
  • Deep, hands-on experience designing and orchestrating workflows with Apache Airflow.
  • A strong track record of building and deploying within AWS cloud environments.
  • Experience in, or a strong passion for, the finance or wealth management industry.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation with performance bonus and comprehensive healthcare benefits. [$120,000-$140,000 base salary]
  • Remote friendly position with occasional office time as needed. Ability to work abroad for up to 2 months per year (conditions apply).
  • Fitness & wellness credit, continuing education allowance, and an Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • A genuinely collaborative culture at a fast-growing fintech where your instincts on process and client experience will actually get implemented.
