What is a Remote Robotics Engineer job?

A Remote Robotics Engineer designs, develops, and tests robotic systems while working from a remote location. They use simulation tools, software, and cloud-based platforms to build and program robots for various industries, such as manufacturing, healthcare, and automation. Communication and collaboration with teams are typically done through video calls, online project management tools, and remote coding environments. This role requires expertise in robotics software, hardware integration, and control systems, alongside strong problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Robotics Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Robotics Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics engineering, programming (such as Python or C++), and experience with embedded systems, supported by a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with industry tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), simulation software (Gazebo or MATLAB), and version control systems (Git) is commonly required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, effective communication, and the ability to work independently are highly valued in remote settings. These abilities ensure the successful design, testing, and deployment of robotics solutions while collaborating virtually with interdisciplinary teams.

Can a Robotics Engineer work remotely?

Yes, many Robotics Engineers can work remotely, especially those involved in software development, simulation, and system design. However, roles that require hands-on work with hardware or on-site testing may necessitate in-person presence. Remote work opportunities depend on the employer, project requirements, and the engineer's skills with tools like CAD, programming languages, and remote collaboration platforms.

What are some typical challenges a Remote Robotics Engineer might face, and how are they addressed?

Remote Robotics Engineers often encounter challenges related to hardware access, coordination with on-site teams, and troubleshooting physical systems from a distance. To address these issues, engineers frequently utilize remote desktop tools, simulation platforms, and detailed documentation to diagnose and resolve problems without being physically present. Regular video meetings, thorough written communication, and close collaboration with on-site personnel help bridge the gap between remote and in-person work. Proactively coordinating schedules for hands-on testing and leveraging cloud-based development environments can also improve project efficiency and outcomes.

Job description

About the Company
At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business.
A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight.
Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the Team
Join Torc's Release organization, where we help ensure autonomous driving software is validated, measured, and ready for deployment. Our team operates at the intersection of autonomy, systems engineering, testing, and data analysis, supporting release decisions through metrics, investigations, and system-level evaluation.
As a Systems Engineer II, you will contribute to release readiness activities by analyzing system behavior, developing metrics and tooling, investigating issues, and partnering with engineering teams across the organization. You will work alongside senior engineers to help evaluate software quality and performance while supporting the processes used to validate Torc's autonomous driving system.
What You'll Do
  • Support release readiness activities through analysis of software performance, testing results, and system-level metrics.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve Python-based tools, scripts, dashboards, and workflows used to evaluate software quality and release health.
  • Analyze test results from simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, closed-course, and on-road testing environments.
  • Investigate system-level issues and support root cause analysis efforts in collaboration with software, systems, validation, and autonomy engineering teams.
  • Work with large datasets to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement across the autonomy stack.
  • Help define, implement, and maintain metrics that provide visibility into software quality, system performance, and release readiness.
  • Collaborate with engineers across Perception, Behaviors, Platform, Validation, and Systems Engineering teams to understand system behavior and support technical investigations.
  • Participate in requirements reviews, design discussions, and validation planning activities.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of release processes, triage workflows, and engineering tools.
  • Document findings, communicate investigation results, and provide actionable feedback to development teams.
  • Support defect tracking and issue management activities throughout the software development lifecycle.

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of experience, or Master's degree with 2+ years of experience in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Ability to investigate technical issues, analyze data, and communicate findings effectively.
  • Experience collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to independently execute technical tasks and investigations while seeking guidance on larger or more ambiguous problems.

Bonus Points
  • Experience with autonomous vehicles, ADAS, robotics, or safety-critical systems.
  • Experience working with cloud-based data platforms, databases, or large-scale datasets.
  • Experience with simulation environments, SIL/HIL testing, or validation workflows.
  • Familiarity with software quality metrics, release processes, or engineering KPIs.
  • Experience building internal engineering tools or automation solutions.
  • Exposure to systems engineering principles, requirements management, or verification and validation activities.
