Job description

Join and lead our BrightStar Care Clinical Team as the Director of Nursing!

At BrightStar Care of Greater Waukesha & Lake Country, we believe that exceptional care starts with exceptional leadership. As our Director of Nursing (DON), you will set the clinical vision and lead a dedicated team of nurses and caregivers committed to delivering a higher standard of care to clients across Waukesha County. You'll oversee every aspect of clinical operations, from quality assurance and compliance to client outcomes and staff development, ensuring our agency continues to uphold its reputation for excellence, integrity, and compassionate service.

Director of Nursing Responsibilities

Clinical Oversight

  • Provides care and leadership as defined within the State of Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.
  • Conducts and oversees initial assessments, reassessments, and supervisory visits for skilled and non-skilled clients.
  • Prepares and reviews Plans of Care (POCs), clinical notes, and documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Ensures all assessments and POCs are completed and signed by RNs within required timeframes (e.g., 60-day certification cycle).
  • Supervises, educates, and mentors clinical and caregiving staff, ensuring adherence to BrightStar Care's standards and policies.
  • Conducts competency validations and annual performance evaluations for all clinical team members.

Regulatory & Quality Compliance

  • Maintains Joint Commission accreditation and continuous readiness by conducting audits, ESC submissions, and performance improvement tracking.
  • Leads Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities and quarterly quality meetings.
  • Tracks infection control, client satisfaction, and safety outcomes to identify trends and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and state/federal healthcare regulations.
  • Collaborates with ownership and operations leadership to ensure the agency remains in "good standing" with all accrediting bodies.

Clinical Data Management & Reporting

  • Regularly reviews Clinical Reports (RN Compliance, Supervisory Visits, Incident Tracking, Task Not Completed, etc.) to monitor quality and regulatory adherence.
  • Reviews incident reports and develops corrective actions and trend analyses for leadership.
  • Maintains organized and accurate clinical records for all clients, ensuring audit readiness.

Skilled and Non-Skilled Care Management

  • Oversees both skilled and non-skilled home care processes from intake to discharge.
  • Verifies practitioner authorization, payer network status, and pre-authorization prior to case acceptance.
  • Ensures timely scheduling of skilled visits (typically within 24–48 hours) and reassessments for ongoing care needs.
  • Monitors supervisory visit frequency: every 60 days for skilled, 90 days for personal care, and 6 months for companion care.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Leads daily and weekly clinical meetings, including participation in office L10 and management meetings.
  • Works closely with the Branch Manager, HR Manager, and Owner on staffing, recruiting, and performance reviews.
  • Attends monthly Franchise Support Center Clinical calls and national Clinical Bootcamp.
  • Supports field staff and care coordinators with clinical guidance, escalation management, and client satisfaction follow-up.

Director of Nursing Requirements

  • Current, unincumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Wisconsin (Required)
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred; must have graduated from an accredited program
  • 3 – 5 years of clinical experience, including at least one (1) year in a home health agency or healthcare facility setting
  • Current CPR certification and negative TB test or chest X-ray
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation with active auto insurance
  • Experience with Joint Commission compliance and QAPI programs strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and develop staff and maintain compliance with clinical and regulatory standards
  • Exceptional assessment, organizational, and communication skills
  • Possess exceptional nursing assessment skills
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to deal tactfully with clients, staff, and community
  • Proven ability to build quality and implement improvements within the operation

Pay Range:

  • Annual salary range of $89,000 to $107,000 per year
