The posted compensation range of $158,683 - $238,035 annually is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay Nebraska Medicine in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. Actual compensation for this particular role will be determined at the time of offer based on years of relevant experience

This position will provide an opportunity to join a Legal Team with collaborative and supportive culture. The attorney in this position will provide legal advice and counsel focusing on information technology, data governance, and digital innovation to Nebraska Medicine, an academic health system which includes two hospitals, a physician practice group, and multiple affiliated legal entities. Key responsibilities for this position include:
  • Provides legal counsel on enterprise IT initiatives, including cloud services, SaaS platforms, electronic health record integrations, digital health tools, telehealth solutions, mobile applications, and advanced analytics technologies.
  • Drafts, reviews, and negotiates complex commercial technology agreements, including software licenses, SaaS agreements, data use and data processing agreements, technology development agreements, and strategic vendor partnerships.
  • Advises IT, digital, and operational leaders on data rights, intellectual property strategy, cybersecurity, patient safety, operational risk, and regulatory compliance.
  • Advises on compliance with federal, state, and international privacy and data protection laws, including HIPAA, state consumer privacy laws, and cross-border data transfer requirements.
  • Advises on legal and regulatory considerations related to artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, including ethical use, risk mitigation, transparency, and governance.
  • Supports enterprise AI governance frameworks, including policy development, committee participation, and review of AI-enabled technology incidents or events.
  • Counsels business and clinical leaders on responsible deployment of AI technologies in operational, research, and patient-facing contexts.
  • Advises on compliant data commercialization and monetization strategies, balancing innovation, regulatory obligations and reputational risk considerations

The attorney serving in this position may have additional practice focus areas within the organization as needed or based on the attorney's specific experience.
Required Qualifications:
• Five (5) years practicing in a law firm or in-house legal department in one or more of the areas identified above required.
• Experience drafting and negotiating contracts required.
• Juris doctorate (JD) degree required.
• High ethical standards and integrity required.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while still demonstrating good judgment required.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required.
• Strong analytical skills required.
• Ability to prioritize and manage a diverse and constantly changing workload in a fast-paced environment required.
• License to practice law in good standing in Nebraska required. If not licensed in Nebraska, must be licensed in good standing in at least one other state and willing and eligible to obtain Nebraska license within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Based on the needs of the department and areas of support, experience in compliance, data security, employment, financial services, governance, information technology, insurance, intellectual property, litigation, pharmacy, privacy, real estate, and trademark.
• Experience advising academic health systems preferred.
