Job description

Work can be onsite, hybrid, or fully remote. Preference for fully onsite, then hybrid and finally remote.
Three professional references required upon submittal in a separate Word document attached.

IBMi System Developer/ Programmer Specialist,  COBOL, AS/400, CL, DDS, DB2,  for i (SQL), ACS, Navigator for i, batch processing.
This position functions as a primary technical authority responsible for sustaining and supporting a mature IBM i (formerly AS/400) environment and its COBOL-based business applications. The role emphasizes ensuring system stability, diagnosing and resolving technical issues, and optimizing or enhancing existing programs to comply with regulatory changes and evolving business processes, rather than focusing on the development of entirely new solutions.  In addition to ongoing support, this role will actively contribute to the organization’s strategic migration from IBM i to Hyland’s OnBase WorkView platform, ensuring smooth data transitions, integration planning, and operational continuity throughout the migration process.

Key responsibilities include monitoring system health, managing batch processes, supporting file transfers, and maintaining SQL-based data access, while providing technical expertise during the transition to OnBase.  The ideal candidate will be able to quickly identify and troubleshoot complex problems, target root causes efficiently, and implement solutions independently with minimal guidance.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Primary– System Support & Optimization (90%):  Maintain and optimize COBOL-based applications on IBM i (AS/400) to ensure system stability and performance. Troubleshoot and resolve application and system issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions with minimal guidance. Manage and enhance batch jobs, file transfers, and integrations with other systems. Monitor system health, job queues, and performance metrics (e.g., WRKACTJOB) to proactively address potential issues. Support SQL-based data access and ensure data integrity across applications. Collaborate with business analysts and stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve technical issues. Develop and maintain clear and comprehensive documentation for programs, processes, and troubleshooting steps. Provide technical assistance for emulator-related issues (PC5250), print/output queues, and spool file management.

Secondary – Migration & Administration (10%): Contribute technical expertise to the strategic migration from IBM i to Hyland’s OnBase WorkView platform, including data transition planning, integration support, and operational continuity. Assist with user profile management, authority adjustments, and job scheduling. Support backup and restore processes (BRMS) and maintain operational runbooks. Participate in testing and validation activities during migration and system upgrades.

1 - Candidate Location: Candidates local who can be onsite fully will be most strongly preferred, followed by candidates who are local enough to be able to be onsite in either a hybrid schedule or at least occasional basis. If client can't find strong local candidates, they will then consider fully remote candidates. If you do not note your candidate's location where requested in the Questions section, or it's determined at any point in screening that the location you've provided is untrue, your candidate will be removed from consideration.
Remote resources must be located within the contingent United States and must remain within the contingent United States for all work while in this role. Candidates must be able to work on the client's Eastern Time Zone business hours.

2 - Position will have a 37.5-hour work week, NOT a 40-hour work week, and candidates must be able to work alternative schedules (i.e. non-business hours for planned maintenance, upgrades, urgent troubleshooting, and/or migration activities that can't be done during normal business hours).
3 - Previous Work Experience - Client is looking for someone with a solid history within a company or organization. Someone who has bounced to multiple positions within a relatively short period of time will not be someone they will consider.
4 - Resumes - Make sure your candidate's resume truly expresses clearly what the candidate has done in their similar roles to this one. A resume that just repeats the same tasks, and is overly templated without giving a true picture of the candidate's experience, will not be considered for the position.
5 - Exceptional communication skills are required.
6 - Any education, degrees, and certifications listed on the resume MUST contain a valid degree/certification details, INCLUDING the date the certification/degree was acquired or candidates will not be considered.
7 -Professional references required upon submittal - When submitting your candidate, include a Word document that includes contact info for THREE professional references for your candidate - upload this in the same section on the Reference tab as you upload the Resume and RTR. These references must be supervisory references from past employment, and at least one of the three must be a supervisor from employment where the candidate worked in a role similar to what is being requested for this position. References must include the full name, phone number, and email address for the reference AND must note where, when, and how the reference worked with the submitted candidate. If you do not include the required references at time of submittal OR we find the references provided have been falsified, your candidate will be removed from consideration.
