Job description

Location: Sioux Falls, SD
Type: Full-Time, On-Site

A Sioux Falls-based commercial general contractor specializing in metal building construction is seeking a senior-level construction professional to strengthen its internal preconstruction and estimating function.

The company works across commercial, industrial, and agricultural markets and delivers steel-frame, wood-frame, precast, and pre-engineered metal building projects. The contractor also partners with leading metal building system providers.

Typical projects include agricultural buildings, storage facilities, schools, airplane hangars, commercial facilities, and industrial buildings.

Position Overview

We are looking for a senior-level construction professional to lead and strengthen the company's estimating and preconstruction function.

This is not primarily a business development role. The ownership team already handles business development and maintains an extensive network.

The priority is finding a hands-on leader who can ensure bids and quotes are completed accurately and on time, coordinate the estimating workload, help evaluate new markets, and personally step into estimating and quoting when the team gets overloaded.

Target Background
  • Senior-level experience in construction estimating, preconstruction, or construction leadership.
  • Strong hands-on estimating and bid-management experience.
  • Experience managing multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Comfortable both leading a function and personally producing estimates or quotes.
  • Strong understanding of construction scopes, pricing, subcontractors, materials, and project requirements.
  • Experience working in a smaller or mid-sized contractor environment where responsibilities overlap.
  • Able to learn new project types and construction markets quickly.
  • Strong internal communication, organization, and accountability.
Preferred Industry Experience

Priority should be given to candidates coming from:

  • Commercial general contractors
  • Design-build contractors
  • Pre-engineered metal building contractors
  • Steel or metal-building contractors
  • Industrial construction
  • Agricultural construction
  • Warehouse or manufacturing construction
  • Similar regional contractors

Direct experience with metal buildings, steel-frame construction, pre-engineered buildings, or commercial, industrial, and agricultural markets is highly preferred.

What We Are Not Looking For
  • Pure business development or relationship-sales candidates
  • Candidates whose experience is primarily construction products or equipment sales
  • Residential-only estimators or homebuilding executives without relevant commercial construction exposure
  • Senior managers who are unwilling to personally help estimate or quote projects
  • Remote-only candidates
Location Requirement

This position is on-site in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The company has previously tried remote arrangements and specifically wants this person working in-house so they can collaborate directly with the team, stay engaged with day-to-day activity, and provide hands-on support when estimating workload increases.

Candidates should either already be within commuting distance of Sioux Falls or be genuinely open to relocating.

Requirements
  • Lead and coordinate the estimating, quoting, and bid process.
  • Ensure bids are completed accurately and submitted on schedule.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple active bid opportunities.
  • Personally assist with estimating and quotes when workload increases.
  • Coordinate with ownership, project teams, vendors, subcontractors, and internal staff.
  • Review scopes, plans, specifications, pricing, and bid requirements.
  • Help evaluate and pursue opportunities in new construction markets.
  • Improve internal preconstruction and estimating processes where needed.
  • Provide senior-level guidance while remaining willing to work directly alongside the team.
  • Support the transition from estimating and preconstruction into awarded projects.
