Job description

The Opportunity

Ulteig is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to serve as a technical leader responsible for the full scope of design, development, and implementation of protective relay settings and coordination studies. You will plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of assigned project work.

  • Lead complex analyses including short-circuit and symmetrical component studies to ensure system reliability.
  • Design and optimize relay settings and coordination strategies for critical infrastructure.
  • Develop advanced protection schemes for transmission, distribution, generation, and renewable energy projects—driving innovation in power systems.
  • Create and execute test plans, assist with commissioning, and troubleshoot protection system events to maintain operational excellence.
  • Ensure compliance through NERC PRC reporting and adherence to industry standards.
  • Mentor and collaborate, providing technical guidance to engineers and fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing.
  • Demonstrate an openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.

What We Expect from You

Education & Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited) required.
  • PE License required.
  • Master’s degree is a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Expertise in system modeling and fault analysis software (ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, EasyPower).
  • Strong knowledge of relay coordination and protective settings for 12.47 kV–345 kV systems (500 kV/765 kV a plus).
  • Familiarity with NERC PRC standards.

Preferred Skills

  • On-site commissioning and relay testing experience.
  • IEEE Power System Relaying and Control Committee membership.
  • Ability to review and produce design drawings (one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams).
  • Knowledge of SCADA, communications, substation equipment, NEC.
  • Willingness to travel 10–20% annually.
  • Valid driver’s license and permanent U.S. work authorization.

Additional Opportunity Details:
Target Base Compensation Range for this role is $141,800 - $184,400
* Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your job specific skills, education, training, job location, number of years of experience related to this role and comparison to other employees already in this role
