Job description

Job Requirements
The PRN Oncology Registrar supports the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (GCC) Cancer Registry by performing cancer casefinding, abstracting, follow-up, quality assurance, data validation, and other registry-related activities.
This is a fully remote position supporting multiple facilities within the UMMS Cancer Registry Network.
Under general supervision, the Oncology Registrar independently reviews medical records to identify reportable cancer cases and accurately abstracts patient, diagnostic, staging, treatment, and outcomes data into the cancer registry database using current national and state reporting standards. The position plays an essential role in supporting cancer program accreditation, regulatory reporting, quality improvement, research, physician initiatives, and organizational decision-making.
This position requires the ability to work independently while maintaining productivity, quality, communication, and confidentiality expectations in accordance with UMMS policies and GCC Cancer Registry departmental standards.
Responsibilities
  • Identify reportable cancer cases through casefinding activities.
  • Perform complete and accurate cancer abstracting using current Commission on Cancer (CoC), SEER, NPCR, and Maryland Cancer Registry standards.
  • Apply ICD-O-3, Solid Tumor Rules, AJCC Staging, STORE Manual, SSDIs, and other applicable coding guidelines.
  • Perform follow-up activities to maintain accurate patient outcome information.
  • Complete quality assurance reviews, data validation, edit resolution, and required corrections.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within Oncolog and other approved systems.
  • Meet departmental productivity, quality, and timeliness expectations.
  • Participate in department meetings, education, accreditation activities, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with special projects, physician requests, committee support, and research-related activities as assigned.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of Protected Health Information (PHI) and comply with all UMMS privacy, security, and information technology policies.
  • Maintain current ODS-C certification and required continuing education.

Work Experience
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current Oncology Data Specialist-Certified (ODS-C) credential required.
  • Associate degree required or other health information management credentials (CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CPC-9, etc.) preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years of cancer registry abstracting experience preferred.
  • Experience using Oncolog, Epic, Aria and Microsoft Office applications preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of CoC, SEER, NPCR, Maryland Cancer Registry reporting requirements, ICD-O-3, AJCC Staging, Solid Tumor Rules, STORE Manual, and SSDIs.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to independently interpret complex medical records and consistently apply abstracting standards.
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment while meeting productivity and quality expectations.
  • Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and medical records science, to include documentation requirements--both regulatory and institutional-record assembly and analysis, coding, abstracting, research methods/data-gathering and automated record management applications
  • Knowledge of personal computer, medical records applications, IMPAC-MRS and general familiarity with mainframe Hospital Information System programs. Basic understanding of anatomy and physiology is necessary in order to read and interpret medical record documentation.
  • Ability to monitor daily work activities, and assist with training and evaluating the performance of clerical medical records staff assigned to the unit, as necessary.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required to work with hospital staff and outside vendors and/or agencies as appropriate
