Remote Python Engineer information

What does a remote Python engineer do?

A Remote Python Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software applications using the Python programming language, all while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities typically include writing efficient code, troubleshooting issues, collaborating with team members through online tools, and integrating third-party APIs or libraries. They may work on web development, automation scripts, data analysis, or backend services depending on the company's needs. Remote Python Engineers must have strong communication skills and be comfortable using project management and version control tools like Git. This role is ideal for those who want the flexibility of working from home while contributing to software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Python engineers, and how can they be overcome?

Remote Python Engineers often encounter challenges such as effective communication across time zones, maintaining productivity outside a traditional office, and ensuring code quality in distributed teams. To overcome these, it's helpful to use collaborative tools like Slack and GitHub, participate in regular virtual meetings, and follow clear coding standards. Actively documenting your work and reaching out proactively to teammates can also foster a sense of connection and streamline project workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Python engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Python Engineer, you need a strong command of Python programming, experience with software development best practices, and familiarity with frameworks like Django or Flask, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency in version control systems such as Git, cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, and continuous integration tools is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear written communication are crucial for effective collaboration in a remote environment. These skills ensure high-quality code delivery, efficient teamwork across distributed teams, and successful project outcomes.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Platform Engineer based in Netherlands.

As a Senior Platform Engineer, you'll build the shared infrastructure and platform capabilities that enable engineering teams to deploy, operate, and scale services across a globally distributed environment. You'll work hands-on across bare-metal infrastructure, Linux, Kubernetes, and cloud technologies to solve complex platform challenges. Your focus will be on creating self-service tools, automating operational work, and making infrastructure simpler and more resilient. You'll work closely with Infrastructure and Engineering teams to turn recurring problems into scalable, reusable solutions. The role combines deep technical ownership with a strong focus on observability, reliability, and developer experience. In a small, highly autonomous team, you'll have significant influence over platform decisions and the systems used by engineers around the world.

Accountabilities
  • Design and build self-service platform capabilities that enable engineering teams to deploy and operate workloads efficiently.
  • Shape and improve workload deployment practices, including GitOps and Kubernetes-based workflows.
  • Develop and maintain global hybrid infrastructure spanning bare-metal servers, Linux systems, containers, and Kubernetes.
  • Automate repetitive operational tasks and transform recurring infrastructure challenges into reusable tools and solutions.
  • Design platform systems with scalability, resilience, reliability, and failure scenarios in mind.
  • Improve system visibility through meaningful observability, including metrics, logs, alerts, and operational runbooks.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to identify infrastructure friction and develop platform capabilities that address their needs.
  • Own the systems and services you build through production, including participation in a follow-the-sun on-call rotation.
  • Contribute to Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and platform engineering practices.
  • Build practical internal tooling using technologies such as Go, Python, and Bash.
  • Operate and support production databases and related infrastructure where required.
  • Contribute to security, identity, and compliance initiatives and translate requirements into robust engineering solutions.
  • Participate in technical decisions around when to use bare metal, Kubernetes, managed services, or other infrastructure approaches.
  • Continuously improve platform architecture, developer experience, operational processes, and infrastructure reliability.
Requirements
  • Strong professional experience working with large-scale, multi-region Linux infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience operating Kubernetes in production environments.
  • Proven experience building platforms, infrastructure tooling, automation, or workflows designed for other engineers.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and core infrastructure concepts, including DNS, HTTP, TLS, networking, and containers.
  • Practical experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD practices.
  • Proven experience owning production observability, including metrics, logging, alerting, monitoring, and runbooks.
  • Ability to develop useful engineering tools and automation, particularly using Go, Python, and/or Bash.
  • Experience operating production databases such as PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Redis, ClickHouse, or Elasticsearch.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure reliability, scalability, failure modes, and operational resilience.
  • Comfortable working across multiple engineering teams, time zones, and sometimes incomplete or ambiguous information.
  • Strong ownership mindset, with the ability to take platform and infrastructure projects from concept through production.
  • Experience with globally distributed infrastructure or internet-scale products is a strong advantage.
  • Ability to make pragmatic infrastructure choices between bare metal, Kubernetes, and managed services based on actual requirements.
  • Experience with Argo CD, Flux, or comparable GitOps technologies is a plus.
  • Familiarity with OIDC, SAML, and SSO is advantageous.
  • Experience translating security or compliance requirements into practical engineering improvements is a plus.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, combined with a pragmatic, problem-solving approach.
  • Candidates should ideally be located within approximately CET 3 hours to facilitate effective collaboration with the wider team.
Benefits
  • 100% flexible working hours, allowing you to organize your schedule around your most productive working times.
  • Fully remote-first working environment with no mandatory office commute.
  • Worldwide medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
  • 25 vacation days per year plus local public holidays.
  • Additional annual loyalty day, increasing by one day each year up to a maximum of 30 vacation days.
  • Meeting-free Thursdays to support uninterrupted deep work.
  • 500 annual home-office budget to help create a comfortable and productive workspace.
  • Paid sick leave.
  • Paid parental leave, including 16 weeks for birthing parents and 8 weeks for non-birthing parents, with local statutory provisions topped up where applicable.
  • Annual company-wide team gathering in a sunny destination.
  • Employee Stock Option Plan, with eligible employees receiving an equity stake.
  • Mental health resources and support through BetterHelp.
  • 480 annual wellness budget.
  • 500 annual educational budget for books, seminars, courses, and other learning activities, including non-work-related education.
  • Annual Apple Music, Spotify, or YouTube Premium subscription.
  • Opportunity to work on globally distributed infrastructure and solve challenging platform engineering problems at significant scale.
  • High degree of autonomy and ownership within a small, technically focused platform team.
