What is a Remote Psychology Today therapist?

A Remote Psychology Today therapist is a licensed mental health professional who offers therapy services online rather than in a traditional office setting. These therapists are featured on the Psychology Today directory, where clients can search for and connect with counselors who provide virtual sessions via video calls, phone calls, or secure messaging. This approach allows clients to access mental health support conveniently from their own home or any private location, making therapy more accessible and flexible. Remote therapists adhere to the same professional and ethical standards as in-person therapists, ensuring confidentiality and quality care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote psychologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a remote psychologist, you need a degree in psychology, state licensure, and experience in clinical assessment and therapy. Familiarity with secure telehealth platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and privacy compliance tools is essential for virtual practice. Strong communication, empathy, and cultural sensitivity are crucial for building rapport and providing effective care remotely. These skills ensure ethical, confidential, and impactful support for clients in a virtual environment.

What is the difference between Remote Psychology Today vs Remote Licensed Therapist?

AspectRemote Psychology TodayRemote Licensed Therapist
CredentialsTypically requires a psychology degree; licensing varies by stateMust hold a valid state license as a therapist or counselor
Work EnvironmentOnline platform connecting clients with psychologistsRemote therapy sessions via secure video or phone
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by mental health platforms, clinics, and private practicesCommonly employed by mental health clinics, private practices, and telehealth services
Search & Comparison IntentPeople seeking licensed psychologists for remote mental health supportIndividuals looking for licensed therapists for remote counseling or therapy

Remote Psychology Today connects clients with licensed psychologists online, focusing on assessment and therapy. Remote Licensed Therapist refers specifically to licensed mental health professionals providing remote counseling. While both roles involve online mental health services, the key difference lies in the credentials and scope of practice. Understanding these distinctions helps users find the right professional for their needs.

How does working remotely as a therapist through Psychology Today impact collaboration and support from colleagues?

Working remotely as a therapist listed on Psychology Today often means operating independently, but many professionals find ways to connect with peers through virtual supervision groups, online forums, or professional networks. While you may not have daily in-person interactions, remote therapists can still collaborate on cases (with client consent), share resources, and seek guidance through scheduled video meetings or digital platforms. It's important to be proactive in seeking out these connections to avoid professional isolation and ensure ongoing development. Many therapists also join local or national associations for additional support and networking opportunities.

ABOUT OPEN SPACE CCW
Open Space CCW was founded in 2018 with a vision of creating a safe, inclusive, and progressive space where people can move from merely surviving to truly thriving-for both our providers and our clients. We created a safe space for affirming, equity-rooted mental health care that never asks anyone to shrink or mask to belong. We are advocates, and practice from an anti-oppressive framework, which means we call out bullsh!t when we see it and work to disrupt systems that are harmful.
Our mission :
Eliminate fear of judgment as a barrier to personal growth and wellness, and ensure a safe space for affirming, equity-rooted care that never asks anyone to shrink or mask to belong.
Our model :
Independent contractors
+ Built-in business mentorship
+ A practice full of unapologetically affirming providers who share your values and your passion.
If you want to better understand where we've been, where we're headed, and why this might be the most meaningful time to join our team, we encourage you to visit our Careers page:

-
WHY THIS MODEL IS DIFFERENT:
Across the state of Pennsylvania, you'll mostly find 2 models:
  1. Traditional W2 Model
  2. Traditional 1099 Model

We've created a third model :
1099 + Built-in business mentorship & coaching
(*Note: Being a budding entrepreneur is not a requirement! If you just want to be a 'normal 1099', that's totally cool, too!)
We can't possibly outline all of the ways we support you in this job posting-but we're going to try and give you a succinct list here. (Head to our Careers page at www.openspaceccw.com/careers to see more details!)
Early-Onboarding Perks (Free & optional-but you'll want them!)
  • Insurance Credentialing? Done-for-you.
  • Brand, Voice + Ideal Client Discovery-including drafting a high-converting Psychology Today profile and an SEO-optimized bio for the Open Space site-ready for your tweaks or thumbs-up.
  • We Start Marketing You-Right away

No more Googling, guessing, or doing it alone. We start building-together-from day one.
Built-In Business Coaching & Strategy Support (For no additional cost!)
You know therapy. But grad school never taught you how to run a business, manage your income, set scheduling and financial boundaries without straying from your values, or price your worth.
That's why this level of support exists. Built-in coaching gives you regular access to strategy, structure, and sanity-without having to go searching or spiral alone.
When something doesn't feel aligned or sustainable, we'll brainstorm ideas, rework your schedule, talk through mindset spirals, map out offerings, walk through your numbers step-by-step-without shame or jargon.
  • Banking & Business Setup
  • Profit First Model for Therapists
  • Systems, Scheduling & Intake Flow
  • Malpractice Insurance-Get step-by-step support securing your own malpractice insurance, including what to look for, how to apply, and which options are most commonly used by private practice clinicians.
  • Health Insurance-If you need health insurance, don't panic. We'll walk you through the Healthcare Marketplace, demystify the process, and help you explore plans that make sense for your income and needs. (And it's more affordable than you may think!)
  • Pricing, Time Off, & Guilt-Free Boundaries-Set a fee structure that supports your financial goals and sustainability, talk through how to develop your ideal schedule that supports whatever season of life you are in, and learn how to take time off without guilt or panic.
  • Growth & Visionary Support

No gatekeeping. No guesswork. Just hype-girl energy, a real-time partner, and strategy that actually moves you forward and helps you build the kind of business that works for you.
Collective Safety. Shared Values. Unmatched Impact.
In a time where safety is especially under attack, this place is a protective, powerful collective.
We're not just "doing therapy". We build intentional containers for healing-for providers and clients alike. Every provider under this roof has been intentionally chosen because they understand what it means to hold space with integrity.
  • Screened for Alignment: Every provider here is vetted for shared values, a commitment to deeply affirming work, and a no-bullsh!t approach to inclusion that goes beyond checkbox allyship. We're not interested in tolerance-we demand alignment.
  • A Practice That Gets Your Clients: Your clients don't have to brace themselves when they reach out to us. From intake to exit, your clients are met with affirming care-not confusion or fear.
  • We Don't Do Neutrality Here: We name harm. We call in. We don't stay silent to keep the peace. We don't "agree to disagree" about rights, identities, or safety.

No mask-wearing. No shrinking. No dodging microaggressions.
Just space to show up fully, and do the work you love to do-without worrying about safety and harm.
-
SCOPE OF WORK:
  • Provide competent and affirming psychotherapy services with the LGBTQIA+ community, diverse relationship types (i.e. ethical non-monogamy), other marginalized identities, and self-selected clients within your clinical scope and licensure. We value EVERYONE here.
  • Timely completion of clinical records in the provided HIPAA-compliant EHR within 48 hours of session.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records ongoing in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Carry and furnish proof of professional liability (malpractice) insurance.
  • Maintain proper PA professional licensure and abide by all laws, rules, regulations, and codes of ethics that are applicable to the services performed at Open Space CCW, and stay current with best practices in mental health care.
  • Offer telehealth services in a HIPAA-compliant, private environment.

Requirements
WE'RE LOOKING FOR CLINICIANS WHO:

  • Care deeply about equity, access, and truly affirming care.
  • Practice from a liberation-focused, systems-aware, anti-oppressive lens.
  • Have professional and/or lived experience working with marginalized communities.
  • Preferably are looking to do around 20-25 billed sessions/week. (But we're flexible on this number! Our minimum is 12+ billed sessions/week.)
  • Want to build your own business without having to figure it all out alone.
  • Are ready to grow inside a space that's transparent, imperfect, and always evolving.
  • Are ready to commit to an intention of at least one year here as you build, grow, and settle into your practice. (But no weird contract to sign regarding this timeframe-just a commitment in good faith!)

We especially value experience and passion in the following areas:
  • LGBTQIA+ affirming and competent care
  • BIPOC mental health and racial identity exploration
  • Ethical non-monogamy, polyamory, and sexuality-affirming therapy
  • Neurodivergent-affirming and neurodivergent-informed practices
  • Trauma-informed, social justice-oriented, identity-centered care
  • Working with clients who have always felt "othered" or left out of traditional therapy
  • Therapy that acknowledges the systems we're navigating-not just the symptoms we're managing

-
