Remote Protein Engineer information

How do remote protein engineers typically collaborate with laboratory teams despite working off-site?

Remote Protein Engineers often work closely with in-house laboratory teams through virtual meetings, shared data platforms, and regular progress updates. They may analyze experimental results provided by lab staff, design new protein variants using computational tools, and communicate recommendations or protocol adjustments remotely. Effective collaboration relies on clear communication, detailed documentation, and the use of collaborative project management software to ensure everyone is aligned, even when not physically present. This structure enables remote engineers to contribute meaningfully to research goals and maintain strong connections with their on-site colleagues.

What is a remote protein engineer?

A remote protein engineer is a scientist who designs, modifies, or analyzes proteins using computational and laboratory techniques, while working from a location outside of a traditional laboratory or office. These professionals use bioinformatics tools, molecular modeling, and other technologies to understand and engineer proteins for applications in medicine, biotechnology, or industry. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams virtually, analyze data, and may occasionally visit laboratories for hands-on experiments, but much of their work can be performed using computer software and online communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote protein engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Protein Engineer, you need a strong background in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and bioinformatics, typically supported by an advanced degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with protein modeling software (such as Rosetta or PyMOL), sequence analysis tools, and experience with wet-lab or in silico techniques are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication skills, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating across remote teams and driving independent research. These skills and qualities are vital for designing innovative proteins and ensuring effective teamwork and project delivery in a virtual environment.

The Role

AI Product Manager This role will drive development of Dyno’s AI products for biological design. You’ll work across modeling, software, and experimental validation to build systems that scientists use and trust. We’re looking for someone who wants to go beyond building models or tools in isolation, and instead work on systems that connect AI outputs to real experiments and, ultimately, therapies that help patients.

Job Type: Full Time

Location: Watertown, MA or Remote

How You Will Contribute

At Dyno, every role is mission-driven. Whether in science, engineering, operations, or business, each AAViator contributes to solving some of the most complex challenges in genetic medicine.

As an AI Product Manager, you will help define and build Dyno’s external AI products. You’ll work closely with scientists, engineers, and wet lab teams to turn complex biological problems into systems that can be deployed and iterated on.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead development of Dyno’s external-facing AI platforms (e.g., design.dynotx.com)
  • Develop field-relevant benchmarks for agentic tasks in biological design
  • Build and improve AI-driven workflows that integrate models, data systems, and experimental feedback
  • Translate scientific and clinical questions into production-ready systems, including APIs, pipelines, and user-facing tools
  • Work directly with wet lab teams to ensure that computational outputs are tested and refined through experiments
  • Contribute to product direction by identifying opportunities where AI can meaningfully improve biological design
  • Move quickly from prototype to production, balancing speed with reliability

Basic qualifications

  • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Data Science or a related field
  • Strong foundation in software development best practices, including version control, testing, deployment, and security.
  • Proven ability to build, maintain, and scale backend systems or APIs in production environments
  • Experience contributing to production-grade data AI-driven applications
  • Alignment with Dyno’s core values - We seek individuals who step up when things get tough, recalibrate when priorities shift, and thrive in a high-expectation environment
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset - you don’t just identify challenges; you find solutions

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with LLMs, agent-based systems, or modern AI workflows
  • Experience working in cross-functional environments involving experimental teams
  • Python expertise strongly preferred

Growth opportunities

  • Broad ownership of AI product strategy and technical direction
  • A clear path to growing into a leadership role as the AI product team expands
