What Does a Remote Proprietary Trader Do?

A remote proprietary trader works from home trading stocks, currencies, and bonds. As a remote proprietary trader, you may work for a bank or financial firm, with duties centered on stock market trading. You develop investment strategies to best leverage the capital of the firm or bank in order to maximize returns. Your responsibilities include using specialized software to perform transactions, understanding and tracking stock market changes, and making potentially high-risk trades to the benefit of your employer. Working remotely, your duties also span troubleshooting potential technical issues, communicating with coworkers and team members, and working independently to complete specified tasks.

How do remote proprietary traders typically collaborate with their teams despite working independently?

Remote proprietary traders often operate independently when making trading decisions, but collaboration is still crucial. Most firms use secure chat platforms, video conferencing, and shared dashboards to facilitate communication among traders, risk managers, and analysts. Regular meetings cover market analysis, risk updates, and strategy discussions, ensuring traders remain aligned with the firm's goals and risk parameters. This collaborative structure helps remote traders stay connected, share insights, and access support despite physical distance.

Remote Proprietary Traders and Remote Forex Traders both operate in financial markets and require similar certifications. The key difference lies in their work environment and the assets traded, with proprietary traders often in structured firms and forex traders working remotely via online platforms.

What is a Remote Proprietary Trader?

A Remote Proprietary Trader is a financial professional who trades stocks, currencies, or other financial instruments using the capital of a proprietary trading firm, rather than their own money, while working from a remote location. These traders analyze market trends, develop trading strategies, and make buy or sell decisions to generate profits for the firm. Unlike traditional traders, they are not client-facing and typically receive a share of the profits they generate. Remote proprietary trading offers the flexibility to work from anywhere and requires strong analytical skills, self-discipline, and a deep understanding of financial markets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Proprietary Trader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Proprietary Trader, you need strong analytical skills, risk management expertise, and a solid understanding of financial markets, often supported by a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Proficiency with trading platforms such as MetaTrader, proprietary trading software, and data analysis tools is essential, and some firms may require certifications like Series 57 or Series 7. Exceptional discipline, self-motivation, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are critical soft skills for success in a remote and fast-paced environment. These competencies enable traders to make informed decisions, effectively manage risk, and achieve consistent profitability while working independently.

Job description

We are Gelber Group -- Passion for Trading. Powered by Technology.

Headquartered in Chicago with offices across the United States and Europe, for more than 40 years, we have set the bar as one of the industryโ€™s most innovative and enduring proprietary trading firms. Our success stems from a relentless pursuit of new trading ideas and careful attention to technology. We believe in a culture of entrepreneurship, innovation, and collaboration and we empower each member of our team to have a meaningful impact from the very start of their career with Gelber. We invest in our future through our technology and talented staff, strategically committing resources to move our firm forward and help our people succeed. We trade a little bit of everything here and are always looking to expand into new opportunities. Our flat organizational structure and focus on a true meritocracy attracts individuals with an edge which contributes to our consistent success.

As an Experienced Discretionary Energy Trader, you will have a real opportunity to have a huge impact on the firm. You will work side by side with other successful and talented individuals to capitalize on market opportunities across global energy markets. This role is for someone who flourishes in a fast-paced environment, has a strong work ethic, a competitive attitude, and a proven record of profitability in a trading position for at least 3 years. This is a senior risk-taking role that will be a key idea generator for the desk.

The ideal candidate would work hybrid from our headquarters in Chicago, IL or office in White Plains, NY, though we are open to remote candidates.

What youโ€™ll do:

  1. Manage your own trading book with a focus on energy markets such as refined products, natural gas, and power
  2. Manage your own risk across a portfolio of active strategies and drive trading decisions
  3. Analyze market fundamentals including supply/demand dynamics, storage levels, weather patterns, geopolitical developments, and regulatory changes
  4. Interpret price action, spreads, and order flow to identify trading opportunities
  5. Develop, test, and refine discretionary or systematic-informed strategies using historical and real-time market data
  6. Continuously monitor market conditions, news, and macroeconomic and energy-specific events
  7. Monitor material changes in levels of risk and variance in PnL, especially focused around deviation from your plans, and proactively communicate those changes to leadership

What weโ€™d like to see:

  1. Experience trading energy products such as natural gas or power.
  2. Nice-to-have experience includes emissions markets, biofuels, Renewable Energy Certificates, or cross-commodity trading
  3. Proven track record independently managing a PnL, or being a senior member of a team driving strategy
  4. Prior Proprietary Trading or Hedge Fund PM experience strongly preferred
  5. Larger bank or physical trading shop experience may be considered if significant decision-making autonomy existed
  6. Defined discretionary edge in energy markets such as fundamental modeling, weather-driven analysis, flow-based insights, or relative value/spread trading
  7. Strong understanding of energy market structure (e.g., storage, transportation, seasonality, regional dislocations)
  8. Entrepreneurial mindset with competitive nature
  9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work both autonomously and as a team player
  10. Quant skills and data literacy are a plus but not required; ability to incorporate data into decision-making is preferred
  11. Openness to feedback and willingness to adapt your trading style with changes in market conditions
  12. 3+ years of verified, risk-adjusted profitability

The approximate annual base compensation range for this position in Chicago, IL and New York is $72,000 to $120,000. The actual offer, reflecting the total compensation package plus benefits, will be determined by a number of factors which include, but are not limited to, the applicantโ€™s experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; geographic location; and internal equity. In addition to your salary, our total rewards package includes health benefits, a 401(k) plan, PTO, parental leave, professional development, tuition reimbursement and discretionary bonus, enhancing your overall total rewards package.

Benefits Highlights

  1. Gelber offers a wide range of benefits to full-time employees in order to meet you and your covered dependents needs. Our comprehensive benefits offering includes:
  2. Traditional and Roth 401(k) retirement program
