What is a remote project editor?

Remote Project Editors are professionals who oversee and manage the editing process of various projects, such as manuscripts, articles, videos, or other content, while working from a remote location. They coordinate with writers, content creators, and other editors to ensure the final product meets quality and style standards. Their responsibilities often include reviewing drafts, making revisions, ensuring consistency, and meeting deadlines, all while communicating and collaborating online. Remote Project Editors need strong organizational, communication, and editing skills to succeed in this role.

How does a remote project editor typically coordinate with authors and other team members in a virtual environment?

As a Remote Project Editor, collaboration is primarily conducted through digital communication tools such as email, project management platforms, and video conferencing. Editors regularly schedule check-ins with authors, designers, and other stakeholders to align on project milestones and address feedback. Clear documentation and prompt, transparent communication are essential to ensure everyone stays on track despite not sharing a physical workspace. This role often requires proactive outreach and strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and maintain workflow efficiency in a remote setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote project editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Project Editor, you need strong editing, proofreading, and project management skills, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), editing software like Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word, and tools such as Trello or Asana is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and attention to detail are essential soft skills for coordinating remote teams and meeting deadlines. These skills ensure high-quality content delivery, smooth workflow management, and effective collaboration in a remote work environment.

Job description

Temporary Editor – Part-Time

Pay: $25.00/hour

Hours: Approximately 20 hours/week

Schedule: Monday–Friday | Approximately 4 hours/day

Preferred Schedule: 8:30 AM–12:00/12:30 PM

Work Arrangement: Remote or Onsite

Assignment: Temporary | Approximately 1 month

Target Start: Mid-September to early October

About the Opportunity

We are recruiting for a Temporary Editor to support the Communications & Marketing team of a highly respected local organization. This is an excellent short-term opportunity for an experienced editor, communications professional, or writer/editor who enjoys polishing content, catching the details others miss, and helping organizations communicate clearly and consistently.

The position is approximately 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Morning availability is strongly preferred, ideally 8:30 AM–12:00/12:30 PM, although some flexibility may be available.

This position can be fully remote, provided you are consistently available and responsive during your scheduled hours. For candidates who prefer an office environment, onsite workspace is also available.

The assignment is expected to last approximately one month, with an anticipated start between mid-September and early October to allow time for training and onboarding.

What You'll Be Doing

The primary focus of this position is copy editing and proofreading, rather than creating large amounts of original content. You will serve as an editorial resource for a variety of internal and external communications, including:

  • Copy editing and proofreading written materials
  • Reviewing content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, and consistency
  • Fact-checking information prior to publication
  • Editing content to align with established AP Style and organizational editorial guidelines
  • Reviewing voice and tone while maintaining the writer's original intent
  • Editing announcements, website copy, feature stories, newsletters, internal communications, talking points, and other materials
  • Providing constructive editorial feedback and guidance to writers
  • Managing both quick-turn requests and larger projects with longer deadlines

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of professional editing, copy-editing, writing, journalism, communications, or similar experience
  • Strong professional proofreading and copy-editing skills
  • Working knowledge of AP Style
  • Experience working within established editorial or organizational style guidelines
  • Ability to edit for voice, tone, clarity, accuracy, grammar, and consistency
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments
  • Comfortable working with quick deadlines and time-sensitive content
  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide thoughtful editorial feedback

Experience within higher education, journalism, media, communications, marketing, PR, nonprofit, government, or another organization serving multiple audiences may translate especially well.
