What is remote program management?

Remote program management is the practice of overseeing and coordinating multiple related projects or initiatives from a location outside of a traditional office setting, often leveraging digital tools and virtual collaboration platforms. Program managers in remote roles are responsible for aligning project objectives with organizational goals, managing resources, and ensuring effective communication among distributed teams. This approach allows organizations to access talent globally and maintain productivity without the constraints of physical offices. Remote program management requires strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills to ensure successful program delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote program manager?

To thrive as a Remote Program Manager, you need strong project management expertise, strategic planning abilities, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Jira, or Trello, and experience with virtual collaboration platforms such as Slack or Zoom, are typically required. Exceptional communication, organizational skills, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for leading distributed teams and managing stakeholders remotely. These competencies ensure efficient program delivery, foster alignment across locations, and drive successful outcomes in a virtual environment.

How does a remote program manager effectively coordinate projects and maintain communication with distributed teams?

Remote Program Managers typically use a combination of project management software, regular virtual meetings, and clear documentation to coordinate tasks across multiple locations and time zones. Effective communication is key, so they often establish structured routines—such as weekly status updates or daily stand-ups—to ensure alignment and quickly address any blockers. Building strong relationships with team members through transparent communication and fostering a culture of accountability are essential to overcoming the unique challenges of remote collaboration.

Job description

The Platforms TPM organization partners with Experimentation, ML, LLM/GenAI, and Data Infrastructure teams to shape how Pinterest measures everything that matters - from product experiments to AI systems to the platforms everyone builds on.

What you'll do:

  • As a Staff Technical Program Manager for Measurement, you'll have the rare opportunity to shape how a company the size of Pinterest measures itself - turning a portfolio spanning experimentation, machine learning, generative AI, and data infrastructure into one coherent, high-impact program.
  • Drive Pinterest's experimentation roadmap - accelerating how confidently and quickly teams can test, learn, and ship new ideas at scale.
  • Own the program driving cost and compute efficiency across our ML systems, and help scale data science workflows into production-grade tooling.
  • Lead cost optimization and evaluation for our LLM and GenAI systems - building the measurement backbone that keeps them fast, affordable, and trustworthy.
  • Own Presto query optimization and support for our analytics agent, keeping the data infrastructure that powers company-wide decisions fast and reliable.
  • Own measurement of GenAI-driven productivity and evaluation frameworks for coding models - helping quantify the impact of AI on how we build.
  • Own cost attribution and usage understanding across shared infrastructure, bringing clarity to how the company invests in its platforms.
  • Own measurement and understanding of Shopping infrastructure, helping the team see clearly where to invest next.
  • Build repeatable prioritization frameworks that let the team move fast and confidently across a wide, fast-changing portfolio.
  • Build transparent communication channels that keep leadership and partner teams aligned on status, risk, and impact.
  • Mentor others and help set the standard for what great measurement program management looks like at Pinterest.

What we're looking for:

  • 5+ years of experience as a technical program manager, ideally driving broad, high-visibility portfolios.
  • A track record of building order out of ambiguity - leading complex, multi-team initiatives from the ground up.
  • Strong instincts for, or hunger to quickly learn, experimentation platforms, ML systems, LLM infrastructure, or data platforms.
  • A sharp sense for prioritization - comfortable making confident calls across competing initiatives with incomplete information.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a bias toward pragmatic, creative solutions.
  • A track record of earning trust with executive leadership and representing your program's interests at the highest levels.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills - you know how to bring people along.
  • A genuine commitment to inclusion, sound judgment under pressure, and courageous, resilient leadership.
  • B.S degree in a technical field or a equivalent work experience

In-Office Requirement Statement:

  • We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection.
  • This role will need to be in the office for in-person collaboration 1-2 times/quarter and therefore can be situated anywhere in the country.

Relocation Statement:

  • This position is not eligible for relocation assistance. Visit our PinFlex page to learn more about our working model.
