What is remote program management?

Remote program management is the practice of overseeing and coordinating multiple related projects or initiatives from a location outside of a traditional office setting, often leveraging digital tools and virtual collaboration platforms. Program managers in remote roles are responsible for aligning project objectives with organizational goals, managing resources, and ensuring effective communication among distributed teams. This approach allows organizations to access talent globally and maintain productivity without the constraints of physical offices. Remote program management requires strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills to ensure successful program delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote program manager?

To thrive as a Remote Program Manager, you need strong project management expertise, strategic planning abilities, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Jira, or Trello, and experience with virtual collaboration platforms such as Slack or Zoom, are typically required. Exceptional communication, organizational skills, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for leading distributed teams and managing stakeholders remotely. These competencies ensure efficient program delivery, foster alignment across locations, and drive successful outcomes in a virtual environment.

How does a remote program manager effectively coordinate projects and maintain communication with distributed teams?

Remote Program Managers typically use a combination of project management software, regular virtual meetings, and clear documentation to coordinate tasks across multiple locations and time zones. Effective communication is key, so they often establish structured routines—such as weekly status updates or daily stand-ups—to ensure alignment and quickly address any blockers. Building strong relationships with team members through transparent communication and fostering a culture of accountability are essential to overcoming the unique challenges of remote collaboration.

Job description

Agency:
TMA
Job Function:
Non Standard Job Profiles
Job Subfunction:
Placeholder
Job Description:
As a Director, Program Management at dotdotdash, you own the program-management practice and the health of delivery across the agency's portfolio. You set the standards, governance, and rhythms that keep concurrent programs on time, on budget, and on-craft, and you lead the team of program and project managers who make that happen every day.
Reporting into agency leadership and partnering closely with Accounts, Creative, Strategy, Production, Engineering, and Finance, you steer cross-project and portfolio delivery from resourcing and capacity through risk and financial performance. You are both a hands-on operator and a people leader: you coach a growing team, mature the discipline on Productive, Workfront, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365), and give leadership a clear, honest view of delivery health across the studio.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Own the program-management practice-its standards, playbooks, governance, and delivery methodology-across the full portfolio of agency work.
Lead, coach, and grow a team of program and project managers, setting expectations, career paths, and a high bar for delivery craft.
Oversee cross-project and portfolio delivery, keeping concurrent programs aligned to timelines, budgets, scope, and quality.
Own resourcing and capacity planning across programs, balancing team allocation against demand in Workfront and Productive.
Establish and run governance-stage gates, status cadences, steering reviews, and escalation paths-so risks surface early and decisions are documented.
Maintain a portfolio-level view of risk, dependencies, and delivery health, and drive practical mitigation before issues reach clients.
Own financial performance across programs-budgets, forecasts, margin, and out-of-pocket (OOP) costs-partnering with Finance in Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365).
Partner with Accounts, Creative, Strategy, Production, and Engineering leads to align delivery plans with client commitments and creative ambition.
Standardize tooling and process on Productive as the primary delivery platform, driving adoption and continuous improvement across teams.
Represent portfolio delivery status, risks, and trade-offs to agency leadership and to clients, aligning discussion with account leads.
Partner with Procurement on vendor and freelance onboarding through Ariba, ensuring the right capacity is in place for peak demand.
Set and monitor delivery metrics-utilization, on-time delivery, forecast accuracy-and use them to improve how the practice operates.
Lead resource planning and staffing for new business and pitches, sizing effort and shaping realistic delivery approaches.
Champion a low-ego, collaborative culture that raises the bar without ego and evolves at the pace of the work.
QUALIFICATIONS:
10+ years in program or project management, including 3+ years leading and growing delivery teams in an agency or studio environment.
Proven track record owning portfolio-level delivery across concurrent, multidisciplinary programs.
Deep experience with resourcing and capacity planning, financial management, and program governance.
Strong command of delivery platforms and resourcing tools-Productive and Workfront-and financial systems such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365).
Experience partnering with Procurement on vendor and freelance onboarding, including Ariba or comparable systems.
Fluency working across Accounts, Creative, Strategy, Production, and Engineering, translating between disciplines and stakeholders.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting delivery health and risk to leadership and clients.
A coaching leadership style that develops people, sets clear standards, and builds accountable, high-performing teams.
Experience standing up or maturing delivery process and methodology across a growing organization.
Experience in digital, experiential, or content production environments is a plus.
$240k-$240k
