Remote Program Management information

What is remote program management?

Remote program management is the practice of overseeing and coordinating multiple related projects or initiatives from a location outside of a traditional office setting, often leveraging digital tools and virtual collaboration platforms. Program managers in remote roles are responsible for aligning project objectives with organizational goals, managing resources, and ensuring effective communication among distributed teams. This approach allows organizations to access talent globally and maintain productivity without the constraints of physical offices. Remote program management requires strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills to ensure successful program delivery.

How does a Remote Program Manager effectively coordinate projects and maintain communication with distributed teams?

Remote Program Managers typically use a combination of project management software, regular virtual meetings, and clear documentation to coordinate tasks across multiple locations and time zones. Effective communication is key, so they often establish structured routines—such as weekly status updates or daily stand-ups—to ensure alignment and quickly address any blockers. Building strong relationships with team members through transparent communication and fostering a culture of accountability are essential to overcoming the unique challenges of remote collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Program Manager, you need strong project management expertise, strategic planning abilities, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Jira, or Trello, and experience with virtual collaboration platforms such as Slack or Zoom, are typically required. Exceptional communication, organizational skills, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for leading distributed teams and managing stakeholders remotely. These competencies ensure efficient program delivery, foster alignment across locations, and drive successful outcomes in a virtual environment.

This Supervisory Program Manager position supports the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the area of Support Services. The mission-critical program provides comprehensive training, safety, standards, curriculum development, and technical modernization services to ensure national border security agents can operate safely and effectively.
As the Program Manager, you are the strategic anchor of the Support Services contract. Your leadership ensures that the systems and personnel training CBP agents to protect our borders are managed flawlessly. You don't just run a program; you directly impact national security by keeping our frontline operators safe and prepared.

  • Status: Full-Time / Contingent Upon Contract Award

Who You Are
You are a visionary leader who excels at navigating complex organizational landscapes and driving cross-functional success. You understand that program management is as much about cultivating relationships and motivating a multidisciplinary team as it is about tracking metrics. With a high degree of emotional intelligence, adaptability, and strategic foresight, you will serve as the primary face of Team Carney to the federal client.
What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities)
  • Lead the Mission: Act as the primary interface for the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) and government stakeholders, ensuring contract deliverables exceed quality, timeline, and budgetary standards.

  • Ensure Compliance: Lead strategic planning and monitor compliance with federal standards, including Section 508 accessibility, security protocols, and accreditation standards.
  • Manage Resources: Coordinate resource allocation, project plans, risk mitigation, and financial modeling to ensure programmatic success.

What You Bring (Qualifications)
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of program or project management experience (federal government contracting environment highly preferred)
  • Tools: Mastery of modern project management systems (e.g., MS Project, JIRA, or equivalent).
  • Education: Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Credentials: Project Management Professional (PMP) certification highly preferred.
  • Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a standard federal background investigation/suitability determination.
