Position Overview:

Virtual Peace of Mind is seeking a licensed and experienced School Psychiatrist to provide psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic clarification, medication consultation, and collaboration with therapists and families across our school-based mental health telehealth program. This role is critical to expanding access to comprehensive care for K–12 students under our Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) contract. Able to independently bill for clinical services. This is a contract-based role designed for a highly skilled professional who can operate autonomously while partnering closely with our team to support client needs.


The ideal candidate is passionate about youth mental health, comfortable delivering care via telehealth, and collaborative in supporting a multidisciplinary team. The psychiatrist will serve as a consultative partner to school counselors, therapists, families, and school leaders—especially for students presenting with complex or treatment-resistant symptoms.


Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Evaluation & Treatment Planning

  • Conduct comprehensive tele psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic consultations for referred K–12 students
  • Develop and support treatment plans that may include pharmacological intervention when appropriate
  • Provide medication management, including prescribing, monitoring, and adjustments in collaboration with caregivers and clinicians
  • Offer second opinions or diagnostic clarification for complex student presentations

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Partner with Virtual Peace of Mind therapists, school counselors, and family resource staff to ensure coordinated care
  • Participate in case consultations with multidisciplinary teams to support treatment alignment
  • Communicate findings and treatment recommendations clearly and compassionately to families and staff
  • Consult with primary care providers or pediatricians when necessary to ensure continuity of care

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation within the EHR (e.g., SimplePractice)
  • Ensure all psychiatric services comply with HIPAA, FERPA, and state-specific medical regulations
  • Participate in internal audits or quality reviews as needed to support clinical compliance and program evaluation

Program Engagement & Professional Development

  • Contribute to the development of psychiatric protocols, referral criteria, and medication guidelines
  • Stay current with best practices in child and adolescent psychiatry, school-based interventions, and telehealth standards
  • Provide clinical insights to support training or educational resources for VPM staff and school partners

Qualifications and Preferred Experience:

Licensure & Credentials

  • M.D. or D.O. with board certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (required)
  • Active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in Virginia (multi-state licensure a plus)
  • DEA registration and authority to prescribe in Virginia

Clinical Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with children, adolescents, or school-aged populations
  • Experience with school-based care, community mental health, or telepsychiatry strongly preferred

Collaborative Practice

  • Demonstrated success working as part of a multidisciplinary team (therapists, school counselors, educators)
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to both clinical and non-clinical stakeholders
  • Skilled in family engagement and culturally responsive care practices

Technology & Documentation

  • Proficient with telehealth platforms, EHR systems, and HIPAA-compliant tools
  • Strong skills in clinical documentation, care coordination, and digital communication
  • Comfortable supporting care delivery in fully remote environments


Contract Structure

  • 1099 independent contractor arrangement.
  • Contractor is responsible for their own billing, taxes, insurance, and licensing requirements.
  • Flexible schedule based on client needs and contractor availability.
