What is a remote product manager?

Remote product managers are professionals who oversee the development and lifecycle of products while working outside a traditional office setting, often from home or other remote locations. They collaborate with cross-functional teams, set product strategies, gather requirements, and ensure products meet market needs—all through virtual communication tools. Remote product managers must excel at digital collaboration, communication, and project management to keep teams aligned and projects on track. This role has become increasingly popular as companies embrace distributed workforces and global talent.

What does a remote product manager do?

Remote product managers are responsible for analyzing product trends, forecasting demand, and implementing the release of new products for your company. Instead of working in the office, remote product managers complete their job duties from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote product manager, your responsibilities may include assessing current market trends and consumer needs to determine where new market niches are emerging and how your company’s existing products fit in those markets. You also oversee the team that develops and implements the release of new technology products to fill these niches. Many remote product managers have sales or marketing backgrounds; this experience provides valuable insight into consumer trends and satisfying customer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote product manager?

To thrive as a Remote Product Manager, you need a strong background in product lifecycle management, market research, and strategic planning, typically supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with agile project management tools like Jira, Trello, and product analytics platforms such as Mixpanel or Google Analytics is essential. Outstanding communication, self-motivation, and cross-functional collaboration skills help remote product managers stand out. These competencies ensure successful product delivery, alignment across distributed teams, and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities in a remote environment.

How does a remote product manager typically coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure product success?

As a remote Product Manager, you'll frequently collaborate with engineering, design, marketing, and sales teams across different locations and time zones. Effective coordination relies on clear communication, regular virtual meetings, and the use of collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and Zoom. You'll often set and track goals, facilitate progress updates, and resolve blockers proactively. Building strong relationships and fostering transparency are essential to maintain alignment and keep projects on track while working remotely.

Job description

At Forbes Advisor, our mission is to help readers turn their aspirations into reality. We arm people with trusted advice and guidance so they can make informed decisions they feel confident in and get back to doing the things they care about most.
We are an experienced team of industry experts dedicated to helping readers make smart decisions and choose the right products with ease. Forbes Advisor boasts decades of experience across dozens of geographies and teams, including Content, SEO, Business Intelligence, Finance, HR, Marketing, Production, Technology and Sales. The team brings rich industry knowledge to Forbes Advisor's global coverage of consumer credit, debt, health, home improvement, banking, investing, credit cards, small business, education, insurance, loans, real estate and travel.
Forbes Advisor is investing in the products and platform capabilities that power everything we build, and we're looking for a best-in-class Product Manager for our technology platforms team. This hands-on role will own products across our CMS platform, including reusable capabilities, partner propositions and platform features that enable our products across the business.
Great products are built on great platforms - so getting the foundations right is everything, whether that's for the teams using our products every day, the partners we build for, or the customers who ultimately benefit from them. You'll take products from discovery through delivery and continuous iteration, making sure what we build today can evolve with the business tomorrow.
Working closely with Publishing, Engineering, Design, Commercial and the wider Product team, you'll turn business needs into a clear, prioritised roadmap. You'll balance user needs, technical feasibility and commercial goals, keeping the people who use your products at the centre of every decision.
The person we're looking for is a genuine all-rounder who's equally comfortable working with engineers, internal teams and business stakeholders. You're naturally curious, enjoy solving complex operational problems, and are comfortable making smart trade-offs to deliver practical solutions. You're a self-starter and an exemplary communicator who keeps stakeholders aligned and reliably delivers what matters most.
Responsibilities:
Strategy & roadmap
  • Develop and maintain product roadmaps for CMS capabilities, partner propositions and platform features, balancing user needs, technical feasibility and business priorities.
  • Work with stakeholders across the business to identify opportunities, prioritise initiatives and continuously evolve the platform.

Product delivery
  • Lead product delivery from discovery through launch and ongoing iteration, ensuring products deliver measurable value.
  • Translate business needs into clear product requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria that Engineering teams can confidently deliver.
  • Own a prioritised backlog and work hand-in-hand with Engineering, Design and QA to deliver high-quality products at pace.

CMS, platform & product capabilities
  • Deliver scalable CMS capabilities, reusable components and platform features that enable teams across the business.
  • Work closely with Engineering to design solutions that are reusable, maintainable and scalable as the platform evolves.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and third-party partners to deliver new partner propositions and enhance the platform capabilities that support them.

AI & continuous improvement
  • Use user feedback, operational insight and business priorities to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Use AI, automation and reusable platform capabilities to improve internal workflows, reduce duplication and accelerate delivery.
  • Measure the impact of new capabilities and use those learnings to inform future product decisions.

Stakeholder communication
  • Build strong relationships across Publishing, Engineering, Commercial and the wider Product team, acting as the central point of communication for your product area.
  • Keep stakeholders aligned on priorities, delivery progress and product decisions.

What you'll bring:
  • 3+ years in product management, with a track record of delivering high-impact platform products, internal tools or business capabilities.
  • Comfortable working across the full product lifecycle, from discovery and requirements through delivery and iteration.
  • Experience with CMS, publishing tools, content platforms or partner-facing products is a plus.
  • Experience delivering cross-functional product initiatives, collaborating across Engineering, Design and business teams to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Comfortable working closely with Engineering and translating business needs into clear product requirements.
  • Experience using AI to improve product development, accelerate delivery and solve complex problems.
  • Data-informed, with strong product judgement and the ability to make pragmatic trade-offs that deliver the greatest value.
  • Exemplary communication and stakeholder skills, with a proven ability to build alignment across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Curious, pragmatic and proactive, with a practical approach to solving problems and delivering value.
