Job description

Overview

The Lead Product Engineer on the Horizon team is responsible for driving the overall effectiveness, quality, and technical direction of product engineering execution across the platform. This role serves as a player-coach, combining hands-on development with ownership of how the team translates complex operational workflows into scalable, reliable, and production-ready systems.

This role is accountable for ensuring consistency in system design, engineering standards, and delivery quality across the team. The Lead Product Engineer operates across multiple workstreams, guiding solution design, shaping architectural decisions, and ensuring alignment between product intent and technical execution.

Working closely with Product, Engineering leadership, and domain SMEs, this individual ensures that complex problem spaces are broken down effectively, solutions are designed with strong domain and operational awareness, and teams are executing with speed, clarity, and high standards in a regulated, high-stakes environment.

Success in this role requires strong technical depth, excellent product judgment, and the ability to lead through influence and direct engagement, raising the bar for execution while enabling the team to move quickly from ambiguity to production.

This is a fully remote position that offers a competitive salary range of $170,000 to $220,000 USD, plus an annual bonus. You'll also receive our excellent benefits package, which includes medical coverage starting on day one and a company-matched 401(k). Compensation may vary based on experience, location, and other job-related factors.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Execution Oversight

  • Provide day-to-day technical and product guidance to Product Engineers and Senior Product Engineers
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality execution across multiple concurrent workstreams
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex technical or product challenges
  • Balance hands-on contribution with oversight to ensure delivery velocity and quality

End-to-End System Ownership

  • Oversee the design and delivery of complex, cross-cutting product capabilities
  • Ensure solutions are cohesive across frontend, backend, and infrastructure layers
  • Maintain accountability for system quality, reliability, scalability, and maintainability across the team’s outputs

Product & Domain Translation at Scale

  • Ensure consistent and accurate translation of domain workflows into product capabilities across engineers
  • Partner with SMEs and Product to validate that solutions reflect real-world operational complexity and constraints
  • Identify gaps, edge cases, and inconsistencies across implementations and drive alignment

Technical Leadership & Architecture

  • Guide architectural direction across key areas of the platform in partnership with engineering leadership
  • Establish and enforce patterns, standards, and best practices across the team
  • Ensure appropriate tradeoffs between speed, scalability, and long-term system health

Operating Model & Ways of Working

  • Define and continuously improve how Product Engineering work is executed (e.g., scoping, breakdown, handoffs, iteration)
  • Ensure strong alignment between Product, Engineering, and SMEs throughout the development lifecycle
  • Improve clarity in execution by driving better definition, estimation, and sequencing of work

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as a key interface between Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders
  • Provide clear communication on technical decisions, tradeoffs, risks, and progress
  • Help align stakeholders on priorities, scope, and execution strategy

Hands-On Development & Technical Depth

  • Contribute directly to critical areas of the codebase, particularly in complex or high-risk areas
  • Set the standard for engineering quality, maintainability, and performance through direct contribution
  • Support troubleshooting, debugging, and resolution of complex production issues

Mentorship & Team Development

  • Actively mentor and develop Product Engineers and Senior Product Engineers
  • Raise the bar on system design thinking, product judgment, and engineering quality
  • Help identify skill gaps and support growth across the team

Iteration & Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement across both product capabilities and engineering processes
  • Identify opportunities to improve developer velocity, system reliability, and overall team effectiveness
  • Ensure feedback loops (customer, SME, internal) are incorporated into ongoing development

Qualifications
  • 4-6+ years of experience building and shipping high-quality production software
  • Proven experience leading or guiding teams in complex, ambiguous environments
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as both an individual contributor and team leader
  • Good judgment in ambiguous environments where the problem is not fully defined yet, where we need to go from zero to one
  • The ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical teammates
  • A bias toward action: you thrive in an environment where you are learning quickly, shipping thoughtfully, and improving through iteration
  • Strong experience with a modern frontend stack, including TypeScript, React, and/or Next.js, styling systems/libraries, and modern build tooling
  • Strong product instincts, great design taste, and a clear sense for building products that feel natural and intuitive to end users
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and tools/workflows that enable fast iteration cycles
  • Experience building modern backend systems using Python, Go, Rust, or similar languages, including APIs, middleware, ORMs, authentication, authorization, and security-minded application design
  • Experience building and shipping software on major cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
  • Experience working in a modern software development environment and shipping quickly with high ownership
  • Comfort navigating and iteratively improving on shared CI/CD, Observability, Reporting, Analytics, and Data-heavy Systems

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience leading engineering efforts in regulated industries (fintech, mortgage, lending, etc.)
  • Experience building workflow-heavy systems or internal operational tools
  • Experience scaling teams, processes, and systems in a high-growth environment
  • Experience improving engineering velocity, system performance, and reliability at scale
  • Experience working closely with product and domain SMEs in complex environments

A Note to Candidates:

You do not need prior fintech or finance experience to succeed in this role. If you’re a strong engineer with product sense, good judgment, and excitement for learning a complex domain, we’d love to hear from you. If your background doesn’t line up perfectly with every bullet, but this role feels like the kind of work you want to do, please apply.
