Job description

The Team: 

Upstart's Product Experience team brings together product design, research, and content strategy to shape the future of lending. We focus on high-craft execution, deep customer insight, and measurable business impact, partnering across product areas to build experiences that are clear, trustworthy, and human. Our Unsecured Lending team focuses on building borrower-facing experiences across personal loans and revolving credit products. This team owns core moments in the borrower journey, including rate selection, origination, and repayment, with a focus on clarity and trust.

As a Product Designer at Upstart, you will support feature-level design work across these experiences, partnering closely with product managers and engineers. You'll work within established design direction to deliver high-quality, production-ready designs that directly impact millions of borrower interactions.

How you'll make an impact

  • Design end-to-end user experiences across borrower-facing flows
  • Translate product requirements into wireframes, interactive prototypes,, and high-fidelity visual designs
  • Collaborate with product managers and engineers to align on scope, constraints, and implementation details
  • Deliver production-ready designs and ensure design intent is preserved through development handoff
  • Incorporate user feedback, data insights, and stakeholder input to iterate on designs
  • Partner with adjacent teams (e.g., Growth) to ensure seamless experiences across the borrower journey

Minimum Qualifications 

  • 3+ years of product design experience, owning small-to-medium projects end-to-end                               
  • End-to-end design: problem/goal definition, rapid user testing and user research, wireframing and strong iterative instincts, interaction and visual design including strong typography skills, running an articulate and repeatable user-centered design process                                
  • Proficiency in Figma, strong fluency in GenAI tools                                                                                            
  • Gives, receives, and incorporates feedback at each stage
  • Gets stakeholder buy-in; delivers smooth design handoffs where resolution matches design intent                 
  • Understands business context at a high level and how design impacts it                         
  • Fluency in working within design systems  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with complex multi-step flows with branching outcomes and plentiful edge cases (applications, forms, comparison tools)
  • Strong familiarity with contributing to or advancing design systems
  • Experience in Fintech, lending, insurance, or other heavily regulated consumer products                                                  
  • Experience working in a triad model (PM/Eng/Design)

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Time zone requirements The team operates on the East/West coast time zones. 

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions' cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.
