What is a remote postdoctoral civil engineering position?

A remote postdoctoral civil engineering position is a research-focused role for individuals who have recently completed their Ph.D. in civil engineering or a related field. Unlike traditional postdoctoral roles, this position allows researchers to work from home or another offsite location, collaborating with academic or industry teams through digital platforms. Responsibilities may include conducting research, publishing papers, analyzing data, and mentoring students, all performed remotely. This setup offers greater flexibility and can expand opportunities to work with institutions worldwide.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote postdoctoral civil engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Postdoctoral Civil Engineer, you need a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a related field, advanced research skills, and a solid understanding of structural analysis, materials, or geotechnical engineering. Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, and finite element analysis tools, as well as experience in remote collaboration platforms, is typically required. Strong written and verbal communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving abilities set exceptional candidates apart. These skills ensure high-quality research output, effective collaboration across locations, and meaningful contributions to academic or industry projects.

What are some common challenges faced by remote postdoctoral civil engineers, and how can they overcome them?

Remote postdoctoral researchers in civil engineering often face challenges such as limited access to laboratory facilities, difficulties in hands-on collaboration, and potential isolation from their research teams. To overcome these obstacles, it's important to leverage virtual collaboration tools, maintain regular communication with mentors and colleagues, and seek out online resources or remote-access labs when possible. Establishing a structured daily routine and participating in virtual conferences or seminars can also help maintain engagement and professional growth while working remotely.

  • Prepare baseline schedules, periodic updates, and recovery schedules
  • Perform critical path, float, and logic analysis
  • Prepare schedule narratives and executive progress reports
  • Coordinate with project managers, construction teams, and subcontractors
  • Identify schedule risks and develop mitigation strategies
  • Support change management and Time Impact Analyses (TIAs)
  • Ensure schedule compliance with contract requirements and industry best practices

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • 1+ years of experience in construction scheduling or project controls
  • Strong proficiency in Primavera P6
  • Experience supporting energy, power, industrial, or heavy civil projects
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • PMI-SP or PSP certification
  • Experience with cost-loaded schedules and earned value management
  • Experience supporting schedule recovery, TIAs, or claims analysis
  • Prior experience working with field teams on large infrastructure projects

Company Description

At Promac Consulting, you will be part of a specialized project controls firm focused on delivering high-quality scheduling, cost, and risk management solutions on complex infrastructure and energy projects.
We are a hands-on, practitioner-led firm, meaning our project controls professionals are empowered to do real technical work not just produce reports. You’ll work directly with experienced leadership, gain exposure to challenging projects, and have the opportunity to grow technically and professionally without unnecessary bureaucracy.

We value:
Technical excellence in CPM scheduling and project controls
Practical field-driven solutions, not template-based approaches
Professional growth, mentorship, and trust

Flexibility, recognizing that experienced professionals work best with autonomy

At Promac, your expertise matters, your voice is heard, and your work directly impacts project success.
