Job description

WATER PRACTICE

Michael Baker International's Water Group provides innovative consulting, planning and engineering solutions for the entire spectrum of the water cycle. We have proven experience in providing a full range of professional services from scientific and technical analysis, concept through design, and construction support services. Protection and management of water resources starts at the watershed level and follows the movement of water through urban and agricultural areas, streams, lakes and reservoirs, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and water/wastewater treatment plants.

What We're Looking For:

Michael Baker International is seeking a highly motivated, early-career Water Resources Associate / Review Engineer to join our growing team in Lakewood, CO. This position is open to both hybrid and remote work. 

In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers and serve as a primary technical liaison between private developers, municipal partners, and federal agencies, making this a uniquely visible and impactful role. This position offers the opportunity to develop your technical skills while receiving hands on mentorship from senior engineers and project managers. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer ready to take on meaningful technical responsibility, expand their expertise in water resources and floodplain engineering, and grow within a nationally recognized firm committed to developing its people.

This position is ideal for an engineer looking to build a strong technical foundation while gaining broad exposure to hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, flood hazard analysis, floodplain management, and GIS mapping. 

What You'll Do:

You will be actively engaged in the technical review, analysis, and coordination of flood studies, development projects, and regulatory processes. 

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Technical Review & Analysis - Provide detailed technical review and written comment on flood studies, master planning documents, engineering plans, specifications, and reports for a wide variety of development projects located within regulatory floodplains, ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards and regulations.
  • Regulatory Coordination & Compliance - Ensure proposed projects adhere to applicable federal, state, and local codes, laws, rules, regulations, specifications, standards, and procedures, with a focus on National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requirements.
  • FEMA Letter of Map Change (LOMC) Support - Provide technical guidance and support to community officials, floodplain managers, private applicants, and consultants navigating the LOMC application and amendment process with FEMA.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration - Act as a technical liaison and collaborate with applicants, project managers, consultants, contractors, and community staff to identify and resolve outstanding technical, regulatory, or political issues that arise during the review process.
  • Project & Schedule Management - Manage workload, monitor project schedules, and track performance to ensure timely and accurate delivery of review comments and project milestones.
  • Deliverable Quality Control - Review technical writing, mapping attachments, tables, and figures within final project deliverables to verify technical accuracy and ensure professional, client-ready work products.
What You Need to Succeed:
  • 4-year degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering required
  • 0-2 years' experience in hydrologic & hydraulic modeling and mapping, floodplain management, watershed modeling. 
  • EIT certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire required. 
  • Knowledge of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) preferred. 
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is $68,493 - $98,887 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
