Work EnvironmentField and office, remote optionsOffice and field, remote options
Industry UsagePower distribution, utility companiesPower transmission, utility companies
Job FocusDesigning pole loading for distribution linesDesigning transmission line routes and structures

Remote Pole Loading Designers primarily focus on designing and analyzing pole loading for distribution power lines, ensuring safety and compliance. Remote Transmission Line Designers work on planning and designing high-voltage transmission lines, often involving larger structures and complex routing. While both roles require similar technical credentials and may be remote, their specific focus and industry applications differ.

What is a Remote Pole Loading Designer?

A Remote Pole Loading Designer is a professional who evaluates the structural capacity of utility poles to ensure they can safely support electrical, telecommunications, or other utility equipment. Working remotely, they use specialized software and data such as pole measurements, equipment weights, and environmental factors to create pole loading analyses and design solutions. This role is crucial for maintaining safety standards and regulatory compliance in the installation and maintenance of overhead utility lines. Remote Pole Loading Designers often collaborate with engineers, field technicians, and utility companies to review existing infrastructure and plan upgrades or new installations.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Pole Loading Designers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Pole Loading Designers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with field teams to obtain accurate site data, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and ensuring compliance with local utility standards. Working remotely can make communication and data verification more complex, so effective collaboration tools and clear processes are essential. Staying organized and proactive in seeking clarification from field staff can help minimize errors and improve efficiency. Additionally, ongoing training in the latest design software and standards can help designers stay current and deliver high-quality work.

This position plays a key role in ensuring the integrity, reliability, and compliance of structural systems exposed to demanding environments, including seismic and load-bearing conditions. The ideal candidate thrives in collaborative engineering settings and brings a balance of analytical skill and practical design experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed structural analysis and design of utility and infrastructure projects using AISC and applicable codes.
  • Develop and review engineering calculations, drawings, and reports related to steel and foundation structures.
  • Utilize PLS-POLE, FEA tools, and other modeling software to assess structure performance and optimize designs.
  • Evaluate structural responses to wind, seismic, and load conditions for stability and safety compliance.
  • Coordinate with civil, electrical, and field teams to ensure design accuracy and construction feasibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required; Masterโ€™s degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of structural design and analysis experience in utilities or infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with PLS-POLE, finite element analysis (FEA), and related engineering software.
  • Solid understanding of AISC structural steel design principles and standards.
  • Experience calculating structure base reactions, load paths, and stress factors.
  • Familiarity with seismic load analysis and regional design requirements.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
