Job description

Position Summary

Senior Controls Developer is responsible for developing innovative control systems dedicated to the sterilization industry designed to meet market, Customer, and regulatory requirements. These advanced control systems are used to monitor and control radiation, sterilization, and conveyance systems as per customer requirements. The Senior Controls Developer is also involved with onsite system commissioning, ongoing control systems maintenance, and development of internal software automation tools. Development tasks will include, but are not limited to, creating system designs with limited guidance, leading small teams of Developers, unit testing programs, large scale system testing, complex problem resolution, providing guidance to junior developers, and leading site implementation. The Senior Controls Developer ensures that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently, and safely as per regulatory requirements. The position also requires staying abreast with advances in control systems, automation, design tools, and development practices.

Note:Domestic & International travel required. Approximately 25%

This position will be onsite atMevex, a STERIS Company located inKanata, Ontario, K2M 2C6, Canada.

What You'll Do As A Senior Controls Developer.

Operational Excellence:

Communicates and collaborates with supervisor, development team members and QA engineers.
Defines and adheres to formal design and quality processes and procedures including code reviews and the usage of development management tools. .
Assists in the research for improved methods of controls and automation and incorporates into future designs.
Contributes to a team effort by performing in accordance with all STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles and other directives; supports the directives and decisions of higher-level management and performs other duties as assigned.


People Leadership:
Mentors and trains Associate Controls Developer and Controls Developer team members.


Delivering Results:
Designs and develops Control & safety systems and associated programs.
Generate hardware design (I/O Allocation, Control Hardware Bill of Materials, etc.) that meets project requirements.
Creates and maintains detailed design specifications, develops test protocols, user guides and design documentation.
Performs Units testing of developed software to minimize defects prior to Factory Acceptance Testing & Leads the remote and/or on-site commissioning.

Customer Relationships:

Provides support to Customers using excellent Customer service and communication skills to represent STERIS positively.
a. Supports Customer control system upgrades.
b. Assists Customers during the resolution process.
c. Reviews and understands Customer requirements for assigned projects and generates proposals.
d. Leads small to medium Customer projects as necessary.
e. Fosters Customer relations during all phases of a project and leads remote and on-site activities.
All other duties as assigned.

The Experience, Skills, and Abilities Needed

Required:

  • Associate Degree & minimum of 5 years of experience / 9+ years of experience will be accepted in lieu of Associate degree
  • Highly proficient in Ladder Logic and Structured Text PLC programming languages with experience authoring PLC code that can be configured using external config files
  • Highly Proficient in the use of development and requirement management tools (JIRA and JAMA)
  • Knowledge of higher-level languages python, C#, C++, javascript
  • Knowledge of SQL databases and queries
  • Expert troubleshooting and resolution skills for critical issues
  • Skills in utilization of simulations tools to aid in the development and testing of controls solutions.
  • Skill to utilize drafting tools such as AutoCAD
  • Skill in active listening and applying feedback
  • Skill in communicating with team members to ensure information is well received and understood
  • Skill in communicating with customers using simplified language to ensure they are fully informed
  • Skill in working with others effectively and efficiently as a team
  • Skill in problem-solving
  • Ability to read and understand P&ID (piping & instrumentation diagrams), mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Ability to adhere to formal design, quality processes, and procedures
  • Ability to identify and minimize/fix defects in the systems and programs
  • Ability to be of assistance remotely or on-site as needed
  • Ability to make decisions as needed or directed
  • Ability to improve one's coding and programming using peer code reviews
