What is a remote plant science?

A Remote Plant Science job involves studying, researching, or applying plant science principles while working off-site, often from home or a remote location. Professionals in this field may analyze plant health, genetics, ecology, or sustainable agriculture using digital tools, remote sensing, or virtual collaboration. These roles can be found in academia, government, agriculture, biotech, or environmental consulting. Many positions require expertise in botany, agronomy, GIS, or data analysis to monitor plant growth, disease, or ecological impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote plant science?

To thrive in Remote Plant Science, you need a strong background in botany, plant physiology, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in plant sciences or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, remote sensing tools, and statistical analysis programs such as R or Python is highly valued, along with relevant certifications. Excellent attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication set top performers apart in remote environments. These competencies ensure accurate research, efficient collaboration, and successful project delivery even when working away from traditional lab or field settings.

What are some common challenges faced when working in remote plant science, and how can they be managed?

A common challenge in remote plant science is maintaining access to field or lab data while collaborating with team members across distances. Professionals in this role often overcome these hurdles with strong project organization, clear digital communication, and the use of robust cloud-based data management systems. Staying updated with advances in remote sensing technologies and participating in regular virtual team meetings also helps ensure smooth workflows. If you're adaptable, proactive, and tech-savvy, you can successfully navigate these challenges and thrive in a remote plant science environment.

Job description

Job Title: Drafter 3

Job Description

The Drafter 3 plays a key role in developing high‑quality 2D drawings and 3D models that support plant retrofit and other engineering projects. This position requires extensive drafting experience and strong proficiency with CAD tools to translate design and engineering input into accurate, detailed documentation. The role also involves field verification and collaboration with engineering and plant teams to ensure designs meet quality, safety, and performance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Use 2D and 3D CAD software to develop accurate models and detailed 2D drawings based on information provided by designers and engineers.
  • Revise and update existing 2D drawings to support plant retrofit projects and other design changes.
  • Participate in plant-site walkdowns to obtain field data, measurements, and dimensional information for design purposes.
  • Apply engineering design principles and standards to ensure drawings and models are accurate, consistent, and compliant.
  • Collaborate closely with plant staff, design engineering teams, and vendors to gather requirements and clarify design details.
  • Lead small projects or drafting workstreams, managing priorities and deliverables to meet project timelines.
  • Ensure all drafting work aligns with quality, safety, and design excellence standards.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with stakeholders to resolve design issues and incorporate feedback.
  • Work alongside another in-house drafter to coordinate workloads and maintain consistency in drafting practices.
  • Support projects related to transmission or distribution systems when applicable, or adapt drafting expertise to other industrial environments.

Essential Skills

  • 7–10 years of professional drafting experience.
  • Strong proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD tools and design software.
  • Hands-on experience using AutoCAD for drafting and design work.
  • Ability to develop and revise 2D drawings and 3D models with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of engineering design principles, standards, and best practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to interpret design requirements and resolve drafting issues.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with designers, engineers, plant staff, and vendors.
  • Ability to lead and manage small drafting projects or work packages.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality, safety, and design excellence.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships across plant and engineering teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in drafting and design is preferred.
  • Experience with Vault or similar design data management tools.
  • Experience in transmission or distribution projects is preferred.
  • Experience in related industries such as manufacturing, civil, or industrial facilities is beneficial.
  • Experience working on substation-related projects is a plus.
  • Comfort working with both 2D and 3D drafting environments.
  • Ability to adapt drafting skills to different industry settings and project types.

Work Environment

This role operates in a hybrid work environment that combines in-office collaboration with remote flexibility. The drafter typically works on site, with the option to work remotely one day per week. You will use AutoCAD and other CAD tools, as well as design data management systems such as Vault, while working closely with another in-house drafter and engineering teams. The work involves both office-based design tasks and occasional plant-site walkdowns to collect field data and verify dimensions, in an environment that emphasizes safety, accuracy, and effective teamwork.
