What is a remote pilot?

A remote pilot controls an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). As a remote pilot, your duties include flying and maintaining a drone and its systems, as well as remaining up-to-date on all FAA regulations regarding UAVs. To become a remote pilot, you must be at least 16 years old, be physically capable of handling a drone, and pass an FAA certification exam to demonstrate your knowledge and ability to manage the risks of flight. Career pilots must also be certified to handle unmanned aerial vehicles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Pilot, you need strong spatial awareness, technical understanding of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and typically a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA (Part 107 in the U.S.). Familiarity with flight planning software, GPS navigation systems, and drone-specific hardware is often required. Excellent situational awareness, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding remote pilots apart. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant drone operations across diverse environments.

What are some common challenges remote pilots face when operating drones for commercial purposes?

Remote Pilots often encounter challenges such as maintaining strong situational awareness when flying drones beyond visual line of sight, navigating complex airspace regulations, and ensuring safe operations in changing weather conditions. Additionally, balancing real-time communication with team members, such as visual observers or project managers, is crucial for successful missions. Staying current with technology updates and regulatory changes is also essential for continued success in this fast-evolving field.

What is the difference between Remote Pilot vs Drone Operator?

AspectRemote PilotDrone Operator
CertificationsFAA Part 107 Remote Pilot CertificateOften holds similar certifications, but may not be required to operate commercially
Work EnvironmentTypically responsible for flight planning, safety, and compliance; may oversee multiple dronesPrimarily focuses on operating drones during missions or shoots
Industry UsageUsed across industries like surveying, agriculture, filmmaking, and inspectionCommonly used in filming, photography, and recreational activities

The main difference is that a Remote Pilot holds specific certifications and oversees drone operations, ensuring safety and compliance, while a Drone Operator primarily focuses on flying drones during specific tasks. Both roles are integral in industries utilizing drone technology, but the Remote Pilot often has broader responsibilities and regulatory knowledge.

Job description

Founded in 1866, The Sanborn Map Company (Sanborn) is one of the oldest continuously operating mapping and geospatial information technology companies in the US. Our work is highly visual, and our mapped data and applications are an essential part of todays information economy. We serve many industries and government departments and need to communicate effectively with them about our wide range of products and services. We remain at the forefront of the GIS and photogrammetry industry by offering high quality, technologically superior products and services backed by the industrys most experienced staff. We are looking for a talented individual to fill this role working in a collaborative environment ready to innovate workflow.

SUMMARY

The Senior Solutions Engineer, Google Cloud & Maps Platform supports the Spatial Intelligence sales organization as a trusted technical advisor, solution architect, and partner facing expert for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Google Maps Platform solutions. The position will collaborate with new and existing high-value clients to document and comprehend use case requirements, devising custom solutions which leverage the full capabilities of Sanborn Geospatial and partner solutions. This role is sales aligned and revenue focused, operating within a Google Partner / Reseller motion. Works closely with Account Executives, Google partner teams, and customers to drive solution adoption, accelerate deal cycles, and articulate differentiated business value using cloud and geospatial technologies. The position requires in-depth knowledge to co-sell with Google, position partner led solutions, and translate technical capabilities into commercial outcomes.

Position Location: Remote (U.S.-based)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Sales Ownership

  • Own the technical sale alongside account executives, from first discovery call through technical close and clean handoff to delivery.
  • Serve as lead technical advisor to commercial and government customers on new business, expansion, and upsell.
  • Handle the technical objections that stall deals: architecture fit, data residency, terms of service limits, integration effort, and total cost at volume.

Google Partner Co-Sell

  • Lead technical execution in Google Cloud and Google Maps Platform co-sell motions joint customer calls, solution workshops, and partner-led demos.
  • Position Sanborn's services, IP, and managed offerings alongside Google technologies to articulate differentiated partner value.
  • Stay current on Google partner programs, solution playbooks, pricing models, and incentive structures that impact deal strategy.

Solution Architecture & Design

  • Design solutions on Google Maps Platform APIs covering mapping, places, routing, geocoding, and the BigQuery-native insights products.
  • Design the supporting Google Cloud footprint, with emphasis on BigQuery, data pipelines, and Gemini or Vertex AI where the use case calls for it.
  • Model consumption and unit economics so the architecture the customer buys is one they can afford at scale and one Sanborn can deliver at margin.

Demonstrations & Proofs of Concept

  • Build and deliver working demonstrations on Google Cloud and Google Maps Platform that connect a technical capability to a dollar outcome the customer recognizes.
  • Run proofs of concept and pilots against real customer data, scoped to close a decision rather than to explore.
  • Create and maintain a reusable demonstration and reference-architecture library so the motion is repeatable by others and does not live in one persons head.

Proposals, RFPs & Deal Support

  • Author technical content for proposals, statements of work, and responses to RFPs, RFIs, and sources-sought notices, including public sector solicitations.
  • Supply the technical assumptions and usage drivers that pricing depends on.
  • Partner with delivery to confirm feasibility and risk before commitments are made.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Google Cloud in front of customers. Hands-on, customer-facing experience with Google Cloud Platform, plus working familiarity with Google Maps Platform APIs or a comparable location and mapping platform.
  • Built the demo. A demonstrable record of building and delivering a working demonstration or proof of concept, not just presenting one somebody else built, and connecting it to a commercial outcome.
  • Data fluency. Working SQL and comfort in BigQuery or an equivalent cloud data warehouse. Enough scripting in Python or JavaScript to stand up a prototype.
  • Commercial instinct. A record of influencing or closing technical deals alongside sellers, and the ability to translate architecture into revenue, cost, and risk language an executive buyer uses.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Google Cloud certification at Associate or Professional level, or the Generative AI Leader credential.
  • Gemini or Vertex AI applied in a customer-facing setting.
  • Geospatial background of any kind: GIS, Esri, imagery, LiDAR, remote sensing, surveying, or location data products.
  • Experience inside a partner, reseller, distributor, or channel model.
  • Consumption or usage-based pricing, and usage forecasting.
  • Selling to state, local, or federal government, including cooperative contract vehicles.
  • Experience supporting ISVs, SaaS providers, or enterprise platform customers.

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Google Cloud certifications (Associate or Professional levels) preferred.

EDUCATION:

Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience. A degree in Computer Science, Geographic Information Science, Engineering, Data Science, Business, or a related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of seven years in customer-facing technical roles. Qualifying backgrounds include pre-sales or solutions engineering, sales engineering, technical account management, solution consulting, technical product management, and technical selling roles. Experience in cloud, geospatial, data, or SaaS is preferred.

Salary Range: 110K - 135K annual

Applicant must live in the U.S. and be authorized to work in the U.S.

Sanborn offers a comprehensive health and wellness program which includes medical, dental, vision, 401k, holiday, PTO, EAP, disability and life insurance benefits.

TO APPLY: Visit our website: www.Sanborn.com under the Careers menu option to apply. We are accepting applications for this position until September 15, 2026. Sanborn is an AA/Veteran/Disability Equal Opportunity Employer.
