What is a remote pilot?

A remote pilot controls an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). As a remote pilot, your duties include flying and maintaining a drone and its systems, as well as remaining up-to-date on all FAA regulations regarding UAVs. To become a remote pilot, you must be at least 16 years old, be physically capable of handling a drone, and pass an FAA certification exam to demonstrate your knowledge and ability to manage the risks of flight. Career pilots must also be certified to handle unmanned aerial vehicles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Pilot, you need strong spatial awareness, technical understanding of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and typically a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA (Part 107 in the U.S.). Familiarity with flight planning software, GPS navigation systems, and drone-specific hardware is often required. Excellent situational awareness, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding remote pilots apart. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant drone operations across diverse environments.

What are some common challenges remote pilots face when operating drones for commercial purposes?

Remote Pilots often encounter challenges such as maintaining strong situational awareness when flying drones beyond visual line of sight, navigating complex airspace regulations, and ensuring safe operations in changing weather conditions. Additionally, balancing real-time communication with team members, such as visual observers or project managers, is crucial for successful missions. Staying current with technology updates and regulatory changes is also essential for continued success in this fast-evolving field.

What is the difference between Remote Pilot vs Drone Operator?

Work EnvironmentTypically responsible for flight planning, safety, and compliance; may oversee multiple dronesPrimarily focuses on operating drones during missions or shoots
Industry UsageUsed across industries like surveying, agriculture, filmmaking, and inspectionCommonly used in filming, photography, and recreational activities

Both roles are integral in industries utilizing drone technology, but the Remote Pilot often has broader responsibilities and regulatory knowledge.

Field Deployment Specialist

Flock

Boston, MA • Remote

$60K - $80K/yr

Full-time

Posted 16 days ago

Job description

The Problem

As Flock rapidly expands our DFR (Drone as a First Responder) solutions, establishing robust, reliable physical infrastructure on the ground is essential to powering aerial operations. Scaling nationwide deployments requires technical specialists who can execute complex field installations, configure custom hardware, and troubleshoot network connectivity under real-world site conditions. You will own physical site assessments, install specialized drone docks and hardware, and ensure our DFR infrastructure is built to last.

Travel:

This role requires up to 100% travel (most weekends home) across the United States. Candidates must be comfortable being on the road for extended periods and have the ability to independently book and manage all aspects of travel, including flights, accommodations, ground transportation, and itineraries. You must be 21+ in order to rent a vehicle from preferred providers.

What You'll Own
  • Execute nationwide on-site installations, routine maintenance, and field support for DFR hardware, drone docks, and supporting infrastructure.

  • Conduct comprehensive physical site assessments to verify electrical power availability, structural mounting locations, network connectivity, and site access constraints.

  • Install and configure hardware including cameras, drone docks, and supporting infrastructure

  • Troubleshoot complex hardware, software, and local network connectivity issues encountered during field deployments.

  • Complete detailed installation documentation, service records, site photographs, and technical field logs for cross-functional operations teams.

  • Partner directly with customers and internal deployment teams to ensure all work is completed in accordance with safety standards and applicable codes.

What This Role is Not
  • This isn't a drone pilot or flight operations role, your focus is strictly on physical infrastructure deployment, hardware installation, and field service rather than flying aircraft.

  • This is not a desk-bound or local office job, you'll be traveling up to 100% across the country to support customer sites nationwide.

  • This isn't a casual administrative position, you will work hands-on outdoors, on rooftops, and at elevated heights using ladders and lifts while moving heavy equipment.

What You Bring
  • An FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, or willingness to obtain certification within 45 days of hire.

  • Experience in field-based work, such as construction, low-voltage installation, telecommunications, or similar technical environments

  • Hands-on proficiency with basic networking, electrical systems, and mechanical assembly.

  • Practical capability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions, navigate elevated heights, and safely lift or transport equipment weighing up to 75 lbs.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license, acceptable identification for air travel, and the ability to manage nationwide travel logistics independently.

  • An associate or bachelor's degree, or experience in customer-facing technical support in public safety environments, is a plus.

Compensation

In this role, you'll receive a starting salary between $60,000 and $80,000 plus overtime as well as Flock Stock Options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in depth with you during our first chat.
