What is a Remote Pick Basic Programmer?

A Remote Pick Basic Programmer is a software developer who specializes in programming using the Pick BASIC language, often for MultiValue database systems such as UniVerse or UniData. These programmers typically work remotely, developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting business applications that run on legacy Pick-based systems. Their responsibilities often include writing and optimizing Pick BASIC code, integrating with modern technologies, and supporting business-critical applications. Remote Pick Basic Programmers are valued for their expertise in maintaining and modernizing systems that many organizations still rely on.

The Remote Pick Basic Programmer and Remote Pick Junior Developer roles are similar in credentials, work environment, and industry usage. Both are entry-level positions suitable for those starting their programming careers, often working remotely in tech or software companies. The main difference lies in terminology, with 'Junior Developer' emphasizing a developmental role, while 'Basic Programmer' may suggest foundational coding tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Pick Basic Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Pick Basic Programmer, you need strong expertise in Pick BASIC programming, data modeling, and experience with MultiValue database systems, often supported by relevant IT or computer science education. Familiarity with tools like Universe, Unidata, jBASE, or D3, as well as source control systems and remote collaboration platforms, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective communication are important soft skills for remote work and supporting cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure reliable software development, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration in distributed work environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Pick Basic Programmers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Pick Basic Programmers often encounter challenges such as managing legacy systems, troubleshooting remotely, and ensuring secure data access. Since Pick systems are frequently part of older infrastructure, understanding the nuances of these environments and documenting changes thoroughly is essential. Effective communication with on-site IT teams and end users is also crucial, as remote work can sometimes lead to miscommunication or delays in resolving issues. Utilizing remote desktop tools and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate these challenges and improve workflow.

Job description

Distinguished Engineer, Full Stack (Remote Eligible)

As a Distinguished Engineer at Capital One, you will be a part of a community of technical experts working to define the future of banking in the cloud.

You will work alongside our talented team of developers, AI/ML experts, data analysts, product managers and people leaders. Our Distinguished Engineers are leading experts in their domains, helping devise practical and reusable solutions to complex problems. You will drive innovation at multiple levels, helping optimize business outcomes while driving towards strong technology solutions.

At Capital One, we believe diversity of thought strengthens our ability to influence, collaborate and provide the most innovative solutions across organizational boundaries. You will promote a culture of engineering excellence, and strike the right balance between lending expertise and providing an inclusive environment where the ideas of others can be heard and championed. You will lead the way in creating next-generation talent for Capital One Tech, mentoring internal talent and actively recruiting to keep building our community.

Distinguished Engineers are expected to lead through technical contribution. You will operate as a trusted advisor for our key technologies, platforms and capability domains, creating clear and concise communications, code samples, blog posts and other material to share knowledge both inside and outside the organization. You will specialize in a particular subject area, but your input and impact will be sought and expected throughout the organization.

In this role, you will work with our Capital Markets and Financial Planning Technology teams as well as the broader Finance Technology Distinguished Engineer community to drive architectural excellence, establish AI-native engineering standards, and deliver the next generation of liquidity management, predictive analytics and financial planning infrastructure that powers Capital One's most consequential financial decisions.

If you are ready to provide thought leadership and build engineering excellence across Capital One's engineering teams, come join us in our mission to change banking for good.

Key responsibilities:

  • Articulate and evangelize a bold technical vision for your domain

  • Decompose complex problems into practical and operational solutions

  • Ensure the quality of technical design and implementation

  • Serve as an authoritative expert on non-functional system characteristics, such as performance, scalability and operability

  • Continue learning and injecting advanced technical knowledge into our community

  • Handle several projects simultaneously, balancing your time to maximize impact

  • Act as a role model and mentor within the tech community, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community

  • Lead proof-of-concept development for emerging AI frameworks and architectural patterns

  • Collaborate with other Finance Technology towers reviewing architectures and designs outside your immediate domain and contributing a cross-cutting perspective that raises the bar org-wide

  • Champion AIOps practices - driving platform reliability through AI-assisted anomaly detection, automated remediation, and predictive alerting across the portfolio

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • At least 7 years of experience in the following:

    • Software engineering and solution architecture

    • Enterprise architecture and design patterns

    • Designing and building distributed HPC and ML systems

    • Full ML development lifecycle using AI and ML frameworks

    • Cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)

    • Data engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field

  • 10+ years of experience in one or more of: software engineering and solution architecture, enterprise architecture and design patterns, distributed HPC and ML systems, ML development lifecycle, cloud computing, or data architecture

  • 10+ years of hands-on coding in commonly used languages Python, Java, Go, Scala, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar; you are a working engineer, not a former engineer

  • 8+ years owning the full SDLC, conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support; you have been paged and you have fixed it

  • Demonstrated AI-native engineering practice across all three layers:

    • Daily use of AI coding assistants to accelerate productivity, utilizing capabilities well beyond basic code completion

    • Spec/intent driven development

    • AI embedded in CI/CD and SDLC tooling - test generation, spec validation, code review augmentation

    • Production experience building LLM-backed or agentic systems - prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, observability, and guardrails included

  • Experience working directly with quantitative analysts or data scientists - model development lifecycles, feature pipelines, backtesting, ML deployment, and the rigor to validate what a model is actually doing
