Are you ready to get your boots in the dirt and make a tangible impact on New York City's infrastructure? We are looking for a proactive, hands-on Geotechnical Field Engineer to drive a high-profile project in Astoria through the end of Summer 2027.

Role Description This is a contract position extending through the end of Summer 2027 and is primarily a field-based role located in Astoria, Queens, NY. You will be the on-the-ground technical expert responsible for executing and overseeing geotechnical explorations, capturing precise subsurface data, and keeping the site moving. The Geotechnical Field Engineer will perform field investigations, site inspections, and geotechnical observations for infrastructure projects. The role involves collaborating closely with project managers and design teams, communicating findings, and assisting with troubleshooting site-related geotechnical issues.


Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute subsurface explorations, including comprehensive geotechnical borings and permeability testing.
  • Conduct pre-drilling subsurface investigations utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to clear test locations.
  • Generate accurate field sketches, detailed photo logs, and concise field reports and documentation.
  • Utilize GIS software and digital field data collection tools to enter, map, and maintain accurate geospatial data.
  • Leverage strong project management skills to plan field activities, manage schedules, track progress, and support timely project delivery.
  • Log soil and rock samples accurately while monitoring construction activities related to earthwork.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline; EIT certification or progress toward licensure is preferred.
  • Strong field service and geotechnical investigation skills, including site inspections and construction monitoring.
  • Clear communication skills, including report writing, documentation, and coordination with internal project teams and contractors.
  • Troubleshooting and technical support skills to identify, analyze, and resolve geotechnical and construction-related issues in the field.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, soil mechanics, and foundation systems, alongside familiarity with relevant codes and standards.
  • Ability to work on site for 8+ hours in field conditions (all types of weather), lift equipment (up to 50 lbs.) as needed, and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license for travel to project sites.
  • Proficiency with basic engineering software, Microsoft Office, and digital field data collection tools; prior internship or professional experience in geotechnical engineering is a plus.
