What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote physical therapist assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Physical Therapist Assistant, you need a background in physical therapy, an associate's degree from an accredited program, and a valid state licensure or certification. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, electronic medical records (EMR), and secure communication tools is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and clear virtual communication make a candidate stand out in this remote role. These skills and qualities ensure effective patient care, regulatory compliance, and strong collaboration within a digital healthcare environment.

How does a remote physical therapist assistant typically collaborate with supervising physical therapists and patients?

As a Remote Physical Therapist Assistant, you will regularly communicate with supervising physical therapists through video calls, messaging platforms, and shared documentation tools to discuss patient progress and treatment adjustments. You’ll guide patients through prescribed exercises virtually, monitor their form and progress, and report outcomes to the supervising therapist. Building strong communication skills and being comfortable with telehealth technology are essential for effective collaboration and patient support in this remote setting.

What is a remote physical therapist assistant?

A remote physical therapist assistant (PTA) is a licensed healthcare professional who supports physical therapists in providing patient care through virtual platforms. Instead of meeting with patients in person, remote PTAs work with patients via video calls, phone calls, or specialized telehealth software. Their responsibilities include guiding patients through exercises, monitoring progress, educating patients on treatment plans, and communicating updates to supervising physical therapists. This role allows PTAs to reach patients who may have difficulty visiting clinics, such as those living in remote areas or with mobility challenges. Remote PTAs must still adhere to state licensing regulations and often work under the direction of a licensed physical therapist.

Job description

UpLift & BetterHelp – Redefining Access to Mental Healthcare

At UpLift, we believe mental health is just as important as physical health — and we're rethinking the mental healthcare model. UpLift is a multi-sided marketplace, applying technology to empower patients to find Therapists and Psychiatric providers covered by their insurance plan.

While 1 in 5 Americans struggle with mental health issues, only 40% of this group received care in the last year. At the same time, only 30% of therapists accept insurance. UpLift acts as the bridge between patient, provider, and insurer — empowering patients to find the best care for their needs at a price they can afford.

Why Join UpLift

  • Flexible earnings model*: Compensation includes both patient care and collaboration activities. Physicians can earn $25 per assigned supervision slot (in capped states) and $30 per completed chart review. Total monthly earnings may vary based on state coverage and activity.
  • Expand access to care: Provide psychiatric services to individuals who otherwise may not have access to mental healthcare.
  • Collaborative model: Support and supervise Nurse Practitioners (NPs) through formal collaboration agreements, including chart reviews and consultation.
  • All-in-one virtual platform: Focus on your patients — UpLift handles credentialing, enrollment, and platform operations.
  • Work from anywhere: This role is 100% remote, with care delivered via UpLift's purpose-built telemedicine platform.
  • Flexible commitment: Part-time, 1099 contract position with autonomy over your clinical schedule.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct video consultations and communicate with patients via telemedicine.
  • Assess, diagnose, and treat patients, including prescribing medication when clinically appropriate.
  • Provide supervision and oversight to Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in states requiring collaborative agreements.
  • Complete required chart reviews and provide timely consultation support to NPs.
  • Maintain responsiveness for collaboration duties in accordance with state requirements and UpLift standards.
  • Coordinate care with UpLift's network of therapists and other providers to ensure high-quality outcomes.
  • Provide empathetic, evidence-based care while upholding UpLift's clinical and service standards.
  • Share product and workflow feedback with UpLift's engineering and operations teams to help improve care delivery.

Who We're Looking For

  • Board-certified Psychiatrist with active clinical experience.
  • Active and unrestricted medical license(s) in one or more of the following priority states: Virginia, Texas, Florida, Georgia, or North Carolina.
  • Multi-state licensure strongly preferred.
  • Experience supervising or collaborating with Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (e.g. NPs) is preferred.
  • Comfortable prescribing medication when clinically appropriate and permitted by state law.
  • Skilled at using online tools and technology to deliver virtual care.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide timely consultation support.
  • Previous telemedicine experience is a plus.

Important to Know

  • This is a part-time, contract (1099) position — not a salaried employee role.
  • Physicians may set their own schedules for patient care; however, collaboration responsibilities require ongoing responsiveness.
  • Physicians may stop seeing patients at any time, but collaborative agreement responsibilities require a 120-day wind-down period to ensure continuity of care.
  • Compensation structure varies by state depending on collaboration requirements (capped vs. uncapped states).
  • UpLift will credential and enroll you with multiple health plans to expand access to insured patients.
  • All care is delivered remotely through UpLift's telehealth platform.
  • All clinical decisions are made independently by licensed providers in accordance with state telehealth laws and professional standards.

License/Certification: Medical License (Required)

Location: Georgia

Work Location: Remote

*Compensation is paid on a per-activity basis and is not a guaranteed hourly wage or salary amount. Actual earnings vary based on state-requirements, completed activities, patient care activity, and other operational factors.
