What are remote paralegals?

Remote paralegals are legal professionals who provide paralegal services from a location outside of a traditional law office, often working from home. They assist attorneys with tasks such as legal research, drafting documents, case preparation, and client communication using digital tools. Remote paralegals rely on technology to securely access and manage case files, collaborate with legal teams, and meet deadlines. This role allows for flexibility and can support law firms, corporations, or independent attorneys across different locations.

What Does a Remote Paralegal Do?

As a remote paralegal, your duties are to perform legal research, prepare legal documents, and interview witnesses or experts preparing to give testimony in civil or criminal trials, arbitration, litigation, and other forms of legal administration. Some paralegals work closely with a specific attorney at a firm, providing them with significant assistance in developing a case. You complete tasks like pulling and reviewing relevant case laws and precedents, drafting legal briefs, collecting information from the client, and ensuring that you file paperwork appropriately. Other paralegals provide more general administrative support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Paralegal, you need a solid understanding of legal concepts, document drafting, and research, typically supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant degree. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and secure file-sharing platforms is essential. Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills help you stand out in a virtual environment. These abilities are crucial for delivering accurate legal support, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring seamless collaboration with attorneys and clients remotely.

How does a remote paralegal typically collaborate with attorneys and other team members?

As a remote paralegal, collaboration with attorneys and legal staff often occurs through digital communication tools such as email, video conferencing, and case management software. You may participate in virtual meetings, share documents securely online, and use project management platforms to track case progress. Building strong communication skills and being proactive in providing updates are essential for staying aligned with the team. Despite the distance, most remote paralegals are expected to be responsive and maintain regular touchpoints to ensure smooth workflow and effective support.

How to Become a Paralegal Who Works Remotely

The educational qualifications you need to become a virtual or remote paralegal vary. Many employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies or a closely related field. Some employers accept candidates with an associate’s degree, certificate, or experience. A remote paralegal needs organizational skills and a stable internet connection to complete their duties, which may include legal document preparation, data entry, and research on behalf of an attorney or a law firm.

Job description

Description
No one wins in divorce court. Call a Truce.
Stop scrolling if you are ready for a meaningful, high-impact career that prioritizes collaboration, client well-being, and your own work-life balance.
If you're a Washington family law attorney who is committed to a healthier way to practice, Truce Law is the place for you. We are a fully remote firm operating within Washington state.
Why Attorneys Thrive at Truce Law (Compensation & Benefits)
We believe that offering attorneys a supportive, well-compensated environment is key to delivering exceptional client service. Target Compensation: $140,000 - $250,000+ (Base salary + performance and client generation bonuses). High performers can earn $250,000+ annually.
Benefits:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance (employer-paid coverage for employees)
  • Four weeks Paid Time Off (Three weeks PTO + One-week paid winter holiday closure).
  • 10 paid holidays
  • 401(k) with 3% firm contribution
  • Flexible schedule
  • 10% new client generation bonus
  • Performance bonuses
  • Firm-provided technology and support
  • Lifestyle Spending Account (LSA)
  • Professional Development Stipend
  • AAA Membership: Roadside assistance, identity theft protection, discounted pet insurance
  • Attorney coverage when you're out, so you can truly relax and recharge while on vacation

What can you expect at Truce?
Our "Truce Mindset" guides every role at Truce Law-from client intake and marketing to legal strategy and finance. It means we consistently prioritize long-term relational health and sustainable efficiency over short-term results.
This commitment looks like:
  • Foresight over Expedience: During the very first call, you realize the prospective client is intensely focused on "punishing" their ex, which conflicts with our mission. You could book the sale immediately, but instead, you choose to spend extra time gently redirecting their focus toward long-term peace and co-parenting stability, ensuring the client we onboard is truly aligned with firm values and reducing conflict down the line.
  • Proactive Communication: The new client hires us. Instead of just sending a boilerplate Notice of Appearance, you take five minutes to pick up the phone and introduce yourself to the opposing paralegal or counsel. You choose to set a positive, cooperative human tone right at the outset, knowing it prevents weeks of unnecessary adversarial friction later.
  • Constructive Communication: Three months in, you are reviewing a case summary. You notice a phrase that unnecessarily criticizes the opposing party's personal life. You choose to edit that phrase out, recognizing that preserving dignity-even when dealing with difficult facts-keeps the focus on legal solutions, leading to smoother negotiations and better client outcomes.
  • Prioritizing Sustainable Health: When faced with a busy week of motions, you could try to handle every detail yourself, risking burnout and mistakes. Instead, you choose to proactively and effectively delegate research, drafting, and administrative tasks to your paralegal and legal assistant, maximizing the capacity of your entire legal pod and ensuring the team delivers high-quality work without sacrificing their (or your) long-term well-being.

Responsibilities
What You'll Do: Champion Collaboration
Your role centers on guiding clients through thoughtful, conflict-reducing solutions, backed by a strong support team.
Lead with Negotiation: Develop thoughtful strategies to meet client goals, prioritizing negotiation and settlement to achieve stable futures.
Conflict-Reduction: Actively pursue and implement collaborative solutions, minimizing the need for adversarial court proceedings.
Advocate Responsibly: Represent clients in court when necessary, maintaining the firm's commitment to respect and long-term resolution.
Mentorship & Leadership: Take advantage of the decades of legal experience amongst our other firm attorneys on case strategy and lead your dedicated legal pod (paralegals and legal assistants) in a supportive manner.
High-Quality Output: Review and finalize all legal documentation (pleadings, motions, agreements, judgments, and orders).
Client Communication: Provide consistent monthly case updates that summarize progress and next steps for peace of mind.
Qualifications
Who We're Looking For: The Collaborative Advocate
You are more than just a litigator; you are a professional committed to both excellence and empathy.
Experience & Licensure: Current Washington State Bar license with 2-5+ years of family law experience. (Trial experience is a plus, but a collaborative mindset is essential).
The Truce Mindset: Demonstrably collaborative, growth-minded, and empathetic approach to law and colleagues.
Communication Mastery: Strong communication, organizational, and truly client-centered skills.
Team Focused: Motivated to advocate for clients' best long-term interests while valuing mentorship, teamwork, and continuous professional development. You'll have full administrative and legal backing, including a Legal Assistant, Paralegal, Client Happiness Coordinator, and Billing Team to support you.
Proactive Growth: A committed, continuous learner who is comfortable adopting modern technology, adapting to firm systems, and thriving in a professional environment dedicated to constant improvement.
