What is a junior paralegal?

A junior paralegal is an entry-level employee who provides support services for a law firm or an attorney. Your job duties and the type of work you do may vary depending on your employer. You may perform research, prepare memorandums, or write summaries for cases. Educational qualifications include a paralegal certificate or an associate’s degree. Some lawyers prefer to hire paralegals with a bachelor’s degree in legal studies. If you have experience and demonstrate your skills, an attorney may delegate more tasks to you. To fully practice law, however, you must attend law school to become a licensed attorney.

What are some common challenges faced by junior paralegals when supporting multiple attorneys, and how can they be managed?

Junior paralegals often support several attorneys simultaneously, which can lead to juggling competing deadlines and varying work styles. Staying organized, prioritizing tasks, and communicating proactively with each attorney are key strategies to manage this challenge. Utilizing task management tools and regularly clarifying expectations can help ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Over time, junior paralegals develop multitasking abilities and adaptability, which are valuable skills for career progression in the legal field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Paralegal, you need a solid understanding of legal terminology, research, and document management, often supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant coursework. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office, is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for supporting attorneys efficiently, maintaining accuracy, and ensuring the smooth handling of legal matters.

The Team You'll Work With
You will be joining our North America Contracts team (US and Canada). Carta Law is the largest AI-native law firm for private capital, born from the combination of Avantia Law and Carta. Our lawyers and paralegals work alongside embedded AI agents to deliver high-volume legal work with a speed and consistency that traditional law firms simply can't match. As a Junior Paralegal, you will rotate across or specialize within one of three practice areas depending on your strengths and interests.
The Problems You'll Solve
At Carta, our employees set out on a mission to unlock the power of equity ownership for more people in more places. We believe that the problems we solve today unlock the opportunities of tomorrow. As a Junior Paralegal, you'll work to:
  • Support lawyers with first-round markups of investment-related NDAs and commercial contracts
  • Manage document lifecycles, track deadlines, communicate with counterparties, and assist with execution
  • Work closely with lawyers and senior paralegals, contributing to high-quality client delivery across fast-moving, high-volume matters
  • Build commercial and legal expertise over time, with opportunities to take ownership of client accounts
About You
We are looking for someone who:
  • 0-1+ years of experience (internship experience) with a bachelor's degree in law or equivalent is preferred; prior exposure to NDAs is a plus but not required
  • Eager to learn and grow. You are motivated, curious, and excited to develop expertise in legal practice - whether that is compliance, contracts, or funds
  • Organized and efficient. You prioritize well, manage competing deadlines, and keep matters moving without losing attention to detail
  • A strong communicator. You write and speak clearly and professionally, understanding that our clients expect crisp, concise advice
  • A self-starter. You take initiative, work independently when needed, and proactively flag issues before they become problems
  • A team player. You collaborate effectively with lawyers, senior paralegals, and client-facing teams across a fast-paced environment

Salary
Carta's compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full time roles, exceptional benefits, and, for applicable roles, commissions plans. Our expected cash compensation (salary + commission if applicable) range for this role is:
  • $57,012 - $81,099 in Hamilton, NJ (hourly rate of $27.41 - $38.99)
  • $63,731 - $90,640 in Seattle, WA (hourly rate of $30.64 - $43.58)
  • $53,664 - $76,328 in Sandy, UT (hourly rate of $25.80 - $45.78)

*Annualized salary based on estimated 40 hour hours per week before overtime
We are hiring for multiple levels and locations, so final offers may vary from the amounts listed based on geography, experience and expertise, and other factors.
