Remote Optical Network Engineer information

What is a Remote Optical Network Engineer?

A Remote Optical Network Engineer is a professional who designs, installs, maintains, and troubleshoots optical fiber networks from a remote location. They work with technologies such as DWDM, CWDM, and other fiber optic equipment to ensure high-speed data transmission over long distances. These engineers may remotely monitor network performance, configure devices, and provide technical support to onsite teams or clients. Their role is crucial in telecommunications, internet service provision, and enterprises that rely on robust fiber optic infrastructure.

What is the difference between Remote Optical Network Engineer vs Remote Network Engineer?

AspectRemote Optical Network EngineerRemote Network Engineer
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco Optical certificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+, Cisco certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, maintain, troubleshoot optical fiber and DWDM networksConfigure, support, troubleshoot various network types including LAN/WAN
Industry UsageTelecom, data centers, optical service providersIT, enterprise, service providers

Remote Optical Network Engineers focus on optical fiber and DWDM systems, requiring specialized optical certifications and experience. Remote Network Engineers have a broader scope, working with various network types. Both roles are essential in network infrastructure, but the optical engineer specializes in high-capacity fiber networks, while the network engineer handles diverse network environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Optical Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Optical Network Engineer, you need a solid background in optical networking principles, fiber optic technology, and network troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like OTDRs, DWDM systems, network management software, and certifications such as Cisco CCNP or Juniper JNCIP are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart. These competencies ensure reliable network performance and efficient remote resolution of complex optical issues.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Optical Network Engineers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote Optical Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex network issues without on-site access, coordinating with geographically dispersed teams, and managing network upgrades or maintenance during off-peak hours. Effective communication with local field technicians and utilizing advanced remote monitoring tools are essential for resolving issues efficiently. Staying up-to-date with the latest optical technologies and maintaining detailed documentation further help in navigating these challenges, ensuring network reliability and performance.

Job description

Description
Professors John Monnier (Astronomy) and Steven Cundiff (Physics) are currently recruiting for a postdoctoral research fellow position. This is a one-year appointment to start in late Fall 2025, with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance.
The Research Fellow will lead a lab demonstration of a highly-multiplexed heterodyne interferometer for remote-sensing/astronomical applications. The U. Michigan contribution is a key part of a larger interdisciplinary, multi-institution grant "Precision Radiometry for Incoherent Spectral Measurements (PRISM)" funded by the AFOSR (PI: Burghoff, UT-Austin, with partners at UCB, UCF, CU, USC, & Yale).
Responsibilities
  • Design and execute experiments involving optical combs, spectrometers, and detector arrays for interferometry at optical/NIR wavelengths.
  • Collaborate with partners at other institutions on hardware and fieldwork, including travel to carry-out sky demonstrations.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Proof of PhD in an area of experimental physics or engineering is required before start date.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proficiency in laboratory work, especially with relevant technologies.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and a track record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Familiarity with optical/near-infrared interferometry, spectroscopy, high-resolution imaging, and/or remote-sensing techniques.

Application Instructions
This role offers lab-based work, requiring on-site presence at the University of Michigan.
U. Michigan conducts background checks (in compliance with Fair Credit Reporting Act) on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third-party administrator.
