• Conduct comprehensive preliminary interviews with clients, thoroughly documenting their mental, behavioral, and emotional health from the initial consultation through the entire treatment process.
• Assess client mental health needs to create culturally sensitive intervention and recovery plans tailored for individuals, couples, families, and groups.
• Facilitate individual therapy sessions and structured group therapy workshops that encourage open communication and shared experiences among participants.
• Continuously monitor client progress through regular assessments and adjust treatment plans as necessary to align with evolving mental health needs.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams consisting of mental health specialists, physicians, nurses, and social workers to ensure cohesive care for clients.
• Coordinate follow-up care for clients referred to psychiatric or hospital services, ensuring smooth transitions and continuity of care.
• Identify potential obstacles to recovery, employing preventative strategies to address behavioral and emotional challenges that may arise.
• Support family members and primary caregivers in managing mental health challenges, offering guidance and resources to assist in their journey.

You will work with a diverse client base reflecting the unique demographic composition of Newark, encompassing individuals from various cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Clients may present a range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use disorders. Your role as a counselor will empower clients to navigate their challenges, fostering resilience and promoting recovery.

• A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, or Psychology from an accredited institution is required.
• Current, valid licensure as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New Jersey.
• Successful completion of the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).
• Previous professional experience as a mental health counselor, demonstrating a commitment to delivering exemplary care.
• Proficiency in utilizing electronic health records software, specifically AVATAR, to document client interactions and maintain accurate case records.
• A comprehensive understanding of the interplay between physical health conditions, emotional well-being, and addiction issues.
• Knowledge of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) best practices and treatment methodologies.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills paired with demonstrable interpersonal capabilities to connect with clients effectively.

• Experience working in a community health setting or similar environment where mental health services are provided
• Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and their application in therapeutic practice.
• Background in crisis intervention and risk assessment; adept at handling emergency situations as they arise.
