To succeed in Remote Open Interviews, you need strong communication skills, a professional online presence, and relevant qualifications or experience for the target position. Familiarity with video conferencing platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams, as well as proficiency in submitting digital applications and portfolios, is essential. Adaptability, self-motivation, and the ability to engage confidently in virtual settings are key soft skills that set candidates apart. These abilities ensure you can effectively showcase your qualifications, make a positive impression, and navigate the unique challenges of remote hiring processes.

What are some common challenges candidates face during remote open interviews, and how can they best prepare?

Candidates often find remote open interviews challenging due to technical issues, unfamiliarity with virtual platforms, and the need to stand out in a group setting. To prepare, it's important to test your technology (camera, microphone, internet connection) ahead of time, practice clear and concise self-introductions, and be ready to engage actively even when others are present. Additionally, setting up a quiet, distraction-free environment and researching the company beforehand can help you make a strong impression.

What are remote open interviews?

Remote open interviews are virtual hiring events where job candidates can join an online meeting or platform at specified times to meet with employers or recruiters. Unlike scheduled interviews, these are typically open to anyone interested, allowing multiple candidates to participate without a prior appointment. They provide a convenient and efficient way for both employers and job seekers to connect, especially for remote or work-from-home positions. Participants may be interviewed in group sessions or individually, and the process often includes an overview of available roles, company information, and a Q&A session.

Job description

About Gradient Health

Gradient Health is building the data infrastructure for medical AI. Their platform gives AI developers access to millions of de-identified medical imaging studies sourced from hospitals and clinics, so they can train better models on more diverse and representative data. Gradient works with hospital data partners on a revenue-share basis and sell curated, labelled datasets to AI companies and research teams. They’re growing fast at 5x YoY with a team of 50 people across Durham, Cape Town and Sao Paulo. They are led by exited founders Joshua Miller and Ouwen Huang and CTO Sai Cheemalapati (ex-Google). They all worked together at their previous startup FarmShots exited to Syngenta.

The role

Gradient is hiring a Staff or Senior Software Engineer (Data Processing) reporting to the CTO Sai and eventually managing part of their 15 person engineering team. You’ll write code every day, take ownership of significant parts of the platform, and help shape how the team works as it scales. This is a chance to join one of the fastest-growing companies in medical AI data infrastructure.

Within six months you’ll start mentoring junior engineers and leading the technical design on new product areas. The role stays hands-on — this is not a step away from coding.

Success requires a highly entrepreneurial mindset and care to uplift others on the team.

This role is remote, open to candidates in US Eastern, Central, or Southern time zones. The team gets together in person regularly.

What you’ll work on
  • Building and scaling the data pipelines that ingest, process, and serve medical imaging data.
  • Designing and shipping new product capabilities end-to-end.
  • Setting the engineering bar — code review, testing, architecture, deployment practices.
  • Talking to customers (radiologists, hospital data teams, AI researchers) and translating what you hear into technical decisions.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and helping the team grow as we hire.
What we’re looking for
  • Min. 7 years of software engineering experience
  • Ideally experience as a tech lead with a team of 4+ engineers
  • Strong architectural instincts, both on a codebase and system design level
  • Must be strong with Cloud frameworks (either GCP, AWS, Azure) and data pipelines (petabyte scale)
  • Python experience preferred
  • Frontend experience is a plus, but not required
  • Passionate about mentorship and leadership
  • Experience in startups/scaleups a plus, especially as one of the early engineers who has seen a team grow around you
  • You care about the customer. You don’t need a healthcare background, but you do need to want to understand the people using what you build
Application process
  • Submit your CV and Github. Any questions, email georgina@semata.ai
  • First interview is with Semata, Gradient’s hiring partner. It is non-technical and meant to tell you more about the role and understand your motivations, achievements, ambitions.
  • The second and third interviews are with the technical team at Gradient (CTO / CDO).
  • Please note that we will prioritise the following criteria in inviting candidates to a first interview: seniority (7+ years), location, startup/scaleup exposure, proven ability to independently drive product and architecture decisions, level of rigour of prior work environments.
