Job description

Job Title: AI Technical SME/Architect
Clearance Required: Public Trust
Work Location: Remote

Alpha Omega is seeking a highly technical, hands-on AI Technical SME / Architect to drive the adoption of artificial intelligence across a diverse federal application portfolio. This role combines deep engineering expertise, AI solution delivery, and organizational enablement.

The ideal candidate will model the capabilities of a senior engineer—bringing strong cloud-native architecture, DevSecOps, and full-stack engineering experience—while expanding into AI enablement, coaching, and cross-team transformation.

This individual will act as a trusted advisor, builder, and evangelist, helping multiple application teams modernize, automate, and embed AI capabilities within a heterogeneous ecosystem spanning .NET, Java, Node.js, Python, Angular, legacy ASP/VB, COBOL, and mixed cloud/on-prem environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Hands-On AI Solution Engineering

  • Design, develop, and deploy AI-enabled solutions and prototypes integrated into mission-critical systems
  • Embed AI into workflows such as:
    • Developer productivity (code generation, testing, refactoring)
    • Operations automation (AIOps, anomaly detection)
    • Data-driven insights and decision support
  • Build and integrate AI services within cloud-native (Azure) and hybrid architectures
  • Develop reusable frameworks, accelerators, and reference implementations

Cloud & Platform Architecture Leadership

  • Architect scalable, secure AI/ML solutions leveraging:
    • Azure (App Services, AKS, Functions, Data Services)
    • Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
    • CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practices
  • Guide modernization efforts for legacy and hybrid systems (ASP, VBScript, COBOL → cloud-native patterns)
  • Establish patterns for microservices, API-first architectures, and distributed systems

AI Enablement, Coaching, and Evangelism

    • Act as an AI coach and mentor to multiple engineering teams
    • Conduct:
      • Training sessions
      • Hands-on workshops
      • Office hours and advisory sessions
    • Drive AI literacy and adoption across the organization
    • Establish and curate knowledge repositories, playbooks, and best practices

    Portfolio-Wide Technology Enablement

    • Analyze application portfolio to identify:
      • AI insertion points
      • Automation opportunities
      • Technical debt reduction strategies
    • Work across a broad stack including:
      • Languages: C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, Go
      • Frameworks: .NET, Spring, Node.js, Angular
      • Databases: SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch
    • Support both modern cloud apps and legacy mission systems

    DevSecOps & Engineering Excellence

      • Implement and optimize:
        • CI/CD pipelines
        • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
        • Observability and monitoring solutions
      • Drive adoption of secure coding, governance, and compliance practices aligned with federal standards
      • Improve release velocity, resilience, and scalability

      Metrics, Value Realization, and Governance

      • Define and track KPIs for AI adoption and efficiency gains
      • Measure:
        • Productivity improvements
        • Cost optimization
        • Quality and cycle time improvements
      • Ensure AI implementations align with federal guidelines, security, and responsible AI practices

      Required Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience)
      • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, cloud architecture, or platform engineering
      • Hands-on expertise in:
        • Cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
        • Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
        • CI/CD and DevSecOps
      • Strong programming experience across multiple languages and frameworks
      • Experience integrating or implementing AI/ML solutions in enterprise environments

Proven ability to work across both modern and legacy systems

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Experience working in federal or regulated environments
      • Background in:
        • AI/ML frameworks and applied AI (LLMs, automation, analytics)
        • Microservices and distributed systems
        • Large-scale application modernization initiatives
      • Experience in a coaching, mentoring, or technical leadership role
      • Familiarity with zero trust architectures and secure cloud patterns

      Key Traits for Success

      • Systems thinker who can navigate complex, heterogeneous portfolios
      • Mentor and teacher who uplifts teams and drives adoption
      • Strategic influencer who can evangelize AI across engineering and business stakeholders
      • Strong communication skills with ability to engage technical and non-technical audiences

      What Sets This Role Apart

      • Direct impact on enterprise-wide AI transformation across dozens of applications and technologies
      • Opportunity to shape AI adoption strategy in a regulated federal environment
