How to Become a Remote Network Engineer

The qualifications needed to start a job as a remote network engineer include a degree, job experience, and the computer and technical setup to access and monitor the network from your location. Employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree in computer science of information technology. You may wish to pursue voluntary professional certification, including becoming a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP). You need an understanding of internet protocol security (IPsec) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol. You should possess expert-level skills in network diagnostic and analytics software.

What Is the Job of a Remote Network Engineer?

As a remote network engineer, you work from home to set up and monitor computer systems and network security. Your duties include working with both hardware and software. You may install new components, protect data with firewalls, assist with system development, and troubleshoot any system issues. You may also communicate with clients to understand their requirements and design a network that matches their needs. Other responsibilities may involve providing support for end-users and performing updates to ensure the system is functioning efficiently. You may work for a specific company or provide freelance services as a remote network engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Network Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and security, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network monitoring tools (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds), VPNs, firewalls, and cloud networking platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are critical soft skills for remote collaboration and independent issue resolution. These competencies ensure secure, reliable network operations and enable seamless support in distributed environments.

How does a Remote Network Engineer typically collaborate with on-site IT staff and other team members?

As a Remote Network Engineer, you will frequently interact with on-site IT staff and cross-functional teams using collaboration tools like video conferencing, ticketing systems, and remote access platforms. Effective communication is crucial, as you may need to troubleshoot issues or implement network changes without being physically present. Regular status meetings, detailed documentation, and clear escalation procedures help ensure everyone stays aligned and network reliability is maintained. You may also participate in virtual training sessions and knowledge sharing to stay updated and support team cohesion.

What is the difference between Remote Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectRemote Network EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentRemote, client sites, data centersOffice, data centers, on-site
ResponsibilitiesDesign, implement, troubleshoot network solutionsMaintain, monitor, support existing networks

While both roles involve network infrastructure, Remote Network Engineers focus on designing and troubleshooting complex networks remotely, often working with clients or cloud environments. Network Administrators primarily manage and support existing networks on-site or in-office. The roles overlap in certifications and industry usage, but differ in scope and work setting.

What is a Remote Network Engineer?

A Remote Network Engineer is an IT professional who designs, implements, manages, and troubleshoots computer networks from a remote location. They ensure network performance, security, and connectivity for businesses without being physically present at the worksite. Their responsibilities may include configuring routers and switches, monitoring network traffic, supporting cloud-based infrastructure, and resolving network issues remotely. This role often requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and expertise in network protocols and security.

Job description

Overview

The Infrastructure Engineer on the Mission Control team plays a critical role in building, operating, and evolving the cloud infrastructure that supports reliable, secure, and scalable product delivery. This role is responsible for turning platform needs, application requirements, and operational constraints into well-automated infrastructure and developer workflows.

Working across cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and production operations, this individual partners closely with Engineering, Product, Security, Data, and domain Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to ensure teams can ship quickly without compromising reliability, security, or compliance.

This role contributes to the development and evolution of core systems, spanning cloud environments, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, containerized workloads, observability, secrets management, networking, data infrastructure, and deployment automation within a regulated, high-stakes environment. Success requires strong systems thinking, pragmatic engineering judgment, and a bias toward automation and repeatability.

The Infrastructure Engineer is expected to operate in an AI-native engineering environment, using modern coding agents, automation tools, and rapid prototyping workflows to improve delivery speed and infrastructure quality. In parallel, this individual will help create the foundation for AI-enabled product capabilities by ensuring the underlying systems are dependable, observable, secure, and easy for engineers to use.

This is a fully remote position that offers a competitive salary range of $140,000 to $240,000 USD, plus an annual bonus. You'll also receive our excellent benefits package, which includes medical coverage starting on day one and a company-matched 401(k). Compensation may vary based on experience, location, and other job-related factors.

Responsibilities

Cloud Infrastructure & Platform Engineering

  • Design, build, and operate cloud infrastructure across major platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure with a focus on reliability, scalability, security, and cost discipline
  • Create reusable infrastructure patterns that help product teams provision, deploy, and operate services consistently
  • Own infrastructure changes from design and implementation through production rollout, monitoring, and iteration

Infrastructure as Code & Automation

  • Build and maintain infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, Bicep, CloudFormation, or similar frameworks
  • Automate repeatable operational workflows, environment provisioning, configuration management, and deployment tasks
  • Improve infrastructure quality through clear modules, versioning, documentation, testing, and review practices

DevOps & Developer Experience

  • Partner with Engineering teams to improve CI/CD pipelines, release workflows, build systems, and deployment safety
  • Reduce friction for developers by building self-service tools, templates, runbooks, and paved-path workflows
  • Balance speed and control so teams can move quickly while maintaining strong production and change-management practices

Reliability, Observability & Production Operations

  • Operate production systems confidently, including deployments, incident response, troubleshooting, and post-incident follow-up
  • Implement and improve observability across logs, metrics, traces, alerts, dashboards, and service health indicators
  • Contribute to architecture and operational decisions that improve uptime, performance, resilience, and maintainability
  • Identify and address reliability risks before they become customer-impacting issues

Security, Compliance & Cost Discipline

  • Implement secure infrastructure patterns, access controls, secrets management, and least-privilege practices
  • Support compliance-aware engineering practices appropriate for a regulated fintech environment
  • Monitor infrastructure utilization and cost, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency without reducing reliability

Culture & Craft

  • Contribute to a culture of ownership, curiosity, pragmatism, and engineering excellence
  • Raise the bar through thoughtful automation, clear abstractions, strong documentation, and sound operational judgment

Qualifications
  • 3-5+ years of experience building, operating, and improving production infrastructure or DevOps platforms
  • Strong experience with one or more major cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, including compute, networking, storage, IAM, and managed services
