The Mechanical Engineer V - M&P for Controllable Solid Propulsion is responsible for the evaluation and development of metallic and non-metallic materials relevant to solid rocket motor propulsion systems as well as supporting manufacturing and compliance efforts.

The position reports to the Analysis and M&P Manager and is part of the Strategic Systems division based in Folsom, CA. This role is remote.

In this role the essential duties and requirements are:

  • Possess expertise in advanced ceramic properties, insulator material characterization, and advanced metal types. 
  • Conduct detailed characterization, develop customized solutions, contribute to research and innovation, provide expert consultation, lead research projects, and optimize metal selection for challenging applications. 
  • Expertise in refractory metal types, their properties, behavior at extreme temperatures, and processing techniques. 
  • Expertise in complex additive manufacturing, mechanical assembly, composite layups, machining, molding and casting, advanced manufacturing planning techniques, and welding tasks and can specify these special processes.
  • Lead evaluation, selection, and qualification of metallics, non-metallics, composites, and EEE electronic parts suited for extreme environments.
  • Author and/or contribute to compliance documentation such as PMP/PMAP, MUA/MUIL, and failure analysis reports.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with standards such as MIL-STD-1546 / -1547, SMC-S-009 / -010, and NASA-STD-6016.
  • Familiarity with materials allowable development and test campaign development.
  • Familiarity with mechanical design concepts related to high precision hardware.
  • An ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and documentation.
  • An ability to effectively communicate technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.

  1. Bachelor's degree in Materials Science Engineering or related field with 10 - 15 years of experience OR Master's degree in Materials Science Engineering with 8 - 13 years of experience

The good faith base salary range for this role is $149,000-$218,000 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future.

This position is incentive plan eligible.
