Clear communication and proactive problem-solving are essential for ensuring that remote work does not impact the quality or timeliness of mission-critical projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote NASA Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote NASA Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering or computer science, with experience in aerospace systems and a relevant degree. Familiarity with specialized software tools like MATLAB, CAD, and simulation platforms, as well as certifications such as PMP or security clearances, are often required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills are essential, especially when working remotely on complex, multidisciplinary projects. These abilities ensure mission-critical tasks are completed accurately and efficiently, supporting NASA’s high standards and innovative goals.

What is the difference between Remote Nasa Engineer vs Remote Aerospace Engineer?

AspectRemote Nasa EngineerRemote Aerospace Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, specialized NASA certificationsBachelor's or higher in aerospace or mechanical engineering, industry certifications
Work EnvironmentNASA facilities, government projects, remote collaboration with NASA teamsPrivate aerospace companies, research labs, remote project work
Employer & IndustryNASA, government space agenciesPrivate aerospace firms, defense contractors, research institutions

Remote Nasa Engineers and Remote Aerospace Engineers share similar educational backgrounds and certifications, often working in remote or hybrid environments. However, Nasa Engineers typically focus on government space missions and collaborate directly with NASA, while Aerospace Engineers may work for private companies on commercial projects. Both roles require strong engineering skills and industry-specific knowledge, but their primary employers and project types differ.

What is a Remote NASA Engineer?

A Remote NASA Engineer is a professional who works for NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) but performs their duties from a location outside of a traditional NASA facility, often from home or another remote site. These engineers contribute to NASA projects by designing, testing, analyzing, and supporting various space missions or research initiatives. They may specialize in fields such as aerospace, software, mechanical, or systems engineering, and utilize remote collaboration tools to communicate with their teams. Remote work allows NASA to access a diverse talent pool and provides engineers with flexibility while maintaining high standards for mission-critical work.

Role Overview

Ad Hoc is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to support the modernization of enterprise-scale systems and infrastructure supporting NASA programs.

This role is ideal for engineers who thrive at the intersection of software engineering, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps. While the position includes hands-on Java development, the primary focus will be on infrastructure automation, deployment modernization, cloud engineering, and improving software delivery practices.

During the initial phase of the program, this individual will focus heavily on DevOps initiatives, helping mature deployment pipelines, automation capabilities, cloud infrastructure, and operational processes. As modernization efforts evolve, responsibilities will become more balanced between DevOps engineering and Java application development.

We have a strong preference for candidates located near Greenbelt, Maryland, or candidates willing to travel onsite periodically for badging and program-related activities.

This role will require the ability to obtain and maintain a government clearance.

• Support cloud and hybrid-cloud infrastructure modernization efforts

• Improve system reliability, observability, monitoring, and operational efficiency

• Develop and maintain infrastructure as code and automation frameworks

• Support application deployments, production troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives

• Design, develop, and maintain Java-based backend services and integrations

• Build and support RESTful APIs and distributed system integrations

• Collaborate with engineers, product teams, QA, DevOps, and client stakeholders in agile environments

• Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and technical planning activities

• Contribute to software engineering and DevOps best practices across the program

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, or related experience and a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent additional experience in lieu of a degree

• Strong hands-on experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and cloud infrastructure

• Experience supporting cloud-native environments using AWS or similar cloud platforms

• Familiarity with modern DevOps and platform engineering tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or similar technologies

• Experience implementing infrastructure automation, containerization, and Infrastructure as Code practices in enterprise environments

• Experience supporting application deployment, release management, and operational excellence initiatives across software delivery teams

• 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience

• Strong experience with Spring Framework and RESTful web services

• Experience supporting enterprise applications in production environments

• Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills across application and infrastructure layers

• Experience working within agile software development teams

• Ability to obtain and maintain a government clearance

• Ability to travel onsite to a NASA location for badging and program support

• Strong preference for candidates who can work onsite in Greenbelt, MD as needed

Desired Qualifications

• Experience supporting NASA or federal civilian agencies

• Experience modernizing legacy enterprise systems

• Experience with event-driven architectures and distributed systems

• Experience with Spring Batch

• Company-subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance

• Flexible PTO

• 401(k) with employer match

• Paid parental leave after one year of service

• Employee Assistance Program
