Job description

Summary
This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, Position Description Number D1194000, within the FMS 8 of the New Jersey Army National Guard. This vacancy announcement is a Title 32, Excepted Service position.
NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.

Duties
Help
As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, WG-5801-10, you will:
  • Troubleshoot, perform maintenance, and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment
  • Troubleshoot equipment and diagnose the cause of mechanical failures
  • Remove and disassemble engines
  • Independently perform repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations
  • Conduct readiness and inspections on vehicles
  • Assist in the maintenance of production reports and recommendations
  • Instruct operator/crew in the maintenance of equipment and provides technical advice and assistance to supported units when requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • All New Jersey Army National Guard members (M-Day, Traditional, and Drill-Status Guardsmen)

Additional Employment Requirements:
-Participation in direct deposit is mandatory
-May be required to successfully complete a probationary period
-Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation
-Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service
  • You may be required to successfully complete a 1- or 2- year probation/trial period to assess performance, conduct, agency needs, public interest, and efficiency. Employment ends unless certified in writing that it advances the agencies interest.

Min: SPC/E-4 and Max: SFC/E-7

Title 32 Dual-Status Positions: Compatible Military Assignments
Appointments may require the selected candidate to be assigned to a *military unit* compatible with the full-time Military Technician (Dual Status) position.

PRE-PLACEMENT PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:A pre-placement physical will be required for anyone selected for this position. Placement into the position will not be made until results are received
Qualifications
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, preventative maintenance, use of common tools, and equipment.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least 18 months of specialized experience or training in the following areas:
  • Diagnosing, repairing, and modifying complex vehicles
  • Knowledge of diagnostic equipment
  • Solving complex maintenance and repair problems
  • Evaluating work performed on vehicles, equipment, and systems
