Job description

Job Duties: 

Work across geographies to create innovative 21st century places and environments on a variety of project types, including urban/mixed use districts and buildings, college and university campuses, new communities, research and innovation districts, corporate employment campuses, design competitions, corridor studies and regional strategies. Responsible for co-crafting and executing beautiful, human scale and inclusive vision for the design of the built environment. Champion sustainable, walkable communities that support social, mental and physical health while improving resiliency and equity. Common project locations include Boston, Northeast Region, and the Middle East. 

  • Develop environmentally-friendly design concepts and solutions for Urban Design projects for US and international markets. 
  • Contribute to new and ongoing planning and interdisciplinary projects focused on resilience, affordability, and equity. Generate strong, cutting-edge and innovative design concepts for a range of project types including municipalities, mixed-use, retail, residential, commercial, entertainment, educational land uses, innovation districts and transit-oriented development. 
  • Coordinate and collaborate with clients and consultants to design sustainable projects incorporating environmentally friendly strategies and concepts including but not limited to LEED standards.
  • Conduct climate change and sea level rise analyses and work carefully with local authorities, landscape architects and other consultants to develop state-of-the-art resiliency strategies.
  • Prepare Urban Design analysis and alternative scenarios, as appropriate (site analysis and existing conditions).
  • Implement zoning analyses and reviews of jurisdictional requirements and align these with project requirements.
  • Develop Urban Design guidelines, feasibility studies, and impact analysis for a range of scales, from individual parcels to city wide planning and zoning initiatives.
  • Generate drawings, layouts, reports incorporating various aspects of projects such as materials, specifications, costs and construction time and phasing, under the direction of the Senior Urban Designer.
  • Prepare graphics, narratives, and presentations that clearly communicate the design process and concepts using various mediums like 2d and 3d diagrams, storyboards, renderings, posters and videos.
  • Collaborate with consultants and integrate engineering and infrastructural requirements into the design.
  • Coordinate with economic consultants on the financial feasibility of projects during the conception and formulation of projects.
  • Mentor junior staff, ensuring the quality of the work.
  • Communicate and consult with pertinent constituencies (client, local communities, government officials, developers, interest groups, various stakeholders) to determine the functional, spatial and economic requirements of projects and create a vision for the project.

Minimum requirements for a new hire in this job title are: 

  • Master’s degree in urban design, or closely related field, and 5 years of experience in any job title with duties involving urban design including at least 1 (one) year of relevant work in Middle Eastern or Asian markets.
  • Expertise required in: creation of Conceptual and Detailed Master Plans and other regulatory approvals required in Middle Eastern or Asian markets, and the United States; environmental analysis and Urban Heat Mitigation analysis; and understanding and interpreting urban design and architectural drawings, such as plans, sections, and elevations.
  • Demonstrated ability in: solving complex urban design, planning, and zoning problems across a wide range of scales; and developing creative and innovative graphics, maps and document layouts. 
  • Demonstrated ability in the following software: Revit, Rhino, Adobe Suite, Enscape, AutoCAD, and ArcGIS.
  • In-depth knowledge of building typologies and land uses in Middle East or Asian markets. 

May work remotely provided within commuting distance of Boston, MA.

Percentage travel required: 10 % domestic; 5 % international          

The compensation range for this role is $91,800 - $100,000.
