WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY
As a Supervisory Research Microbiologist, you will use your knowledge and experience to optimize business results and customer experience by:
  • Conceiving and directing major, multi-phase basic and applied research in a microbiological specialty
    area.
  • Reviewing experimental protocols, advising on the operational aspects of the studies and managing the review, appraisal and interpretation of final experimental results.
  • Developing new and innovative research methods to attack highly complex fundamental issues.
  • Evaluating extramural research projects and recommending revisions, continuations or terminations as necessary.
  • Preparing publications and presentations and representing the agency on scientific committees.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Basic Qualifications:
A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year of specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following:
  • Conducting or leading basic and applied microbiological research projects related to poliovirus or other picornaviruses, including developing research approaches, analyzing findings, and supporting solutions to public health or safety challenges;
  • Evaluating scientific literature, research data, and emerging developments from multiple disciplines and sources to support research planning, program priorities, and evidence-based recommendations;
  • Providing technical guidance and consultation on research studies or scientific projects, including reviewing study protocols, advising on methodology and operational considerations, and interpreting research results;
  • Assessing intramural or extramural research activities to determine scientific quality, progress, and alignment with organizational objectives, including recommending modifications or continuation of research efforts and providing supervisory leadership for staff and operations; and
  • Preparing scientific reports, publications, presentations, or briefing materials and representing an organization on scientific workgroups, committees, or interagency collaborations related to microbiology or public health research.
