Job description

This is a remote position.

We’re looking for an experienced CIS Application Support Engineer with hands‑on expertise in Customer/1 (C/1) and COBOL to support, maintain, and enhance a legacy Customer Information System for a major utility. This role focuses on application maintenance, defect resolution, batch job support, and small enhancements that keep the CIS stable and running.

If you’ve worked in utility billing systems and still enjoy solving problems in COBOL, this is a long‑term, stable contract where your experience truly matters.


What You’ll Do
  • Support and maintain the Customer/1 CIS application

  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in COBOL, batch jobs, and related components

  • Analyze billing, metering, payments, collections, and customer workflows

  • Implement small enhancements, fixes, and logic updates

  • Work with business users to understand issues and translate them into technical solutions

  • Ensure system stability, data integrity, and accurate billing operations

  • Participate in on‑call or after‑hours support rotations (if required)



RequirementsWhat You Bring
  • Hands‑on experience with Customer/1 (C/1) — required

  • Strong COBOL programming and maintenance skills

  • Experience supporting CIS systems in utilities (electric, gas, water)

  • Understanding of billing cycles, meter reads, payments, adjustments, and customer account logic

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex legacy code and batch processes

  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working independently

  • Bonus: experience with mainframe environments, JCL, DB2, or related legacy tech
