What is a remote medical coder?

A remote medical coder is a healthcare professional who reviews clinical documents and assigns standardized codes for diagnoses, procedures, and medical services, all while working from a remote location such as their home. These codes are essential for billing, insurance claims, and maintaining patient records. Remote medical coders typically use electronic health records (EHR) and must have a strong understanding of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and relevant regulations. Working remotely offers flexibility but still requires attention to detail, confidentiality, and adherence to industry standards.

What does a remote medical coder do?

Remote medical coders are medical coders who work from home or locations outside of healthcare facilities. They process patient information, such as diagnosis, services rendered, and equipment used to conduct tests, in order to translate it into medical codes consisting of numbers and letters. Billing and coding specialists manage this information so that patients or their insurance companies can be billed appropriately. Remote medical coders may be self-employed or work for large coding firms that contract with hospitals or healthcare facilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote medical coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Medical Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems such as ICD-10 and CPT, usually supported by a coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS). Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs) and coding software like 3M or Epic is essential for accurate and efficient work. Attention to detail, time management, and strong written communication skills help remote coders excel in independent, deadline-driven environments. These abilities ensure accurate billing, compliance with regulations, and minimal claim denials, which are critical for healthcare organizations' operational and financial success.

How do remote medical coders typically communicate and collaborate with healthcare providers and team members?

Remote Medical Coders often collaborate with healthcare providers, billing teams, and other coders through secure digital platforms, email, and scheduled video conferences. Clear communication is essential to clarify documentation, resolve coding discrepancies, and ensure accurate billing. Many employers use specialized health information systems and project management tools to streamline workflow and maintain HIPAA compliance. Frequent virtual meetings and messaging help foster teamwork and keep everyone aligned, even when working from different locations.

Job description

Company: Revu Healthcare

Position Type: Independent Contractor (1099) — Flexible / On-Call Roster

Work Location: Remote

Hours: Variable, project-based — no guaranteed weekly hours; availability requested as projects arise (typically 15+ hours/week when active on a project)

About Revu Healthcare

Revu Healthcare is a healthcare consulting firm specializing in compliance, revenue integrity, and audit review services. Our team includes certified coders, consultants, nurses, and physicians dedicated to helping healthcare organizations maintain regulatory compliance and coding accuracy.

We partner with hospitals, health systems, and consulting organizations to deliver high-quality outpatient coding audits, validation reviews, and compliance support.

Position Overview

Revu Healthcare is building a talent pool of experienced Outpatient Medical Coders (CPC) to support coding validation and audit projects on an as-needed basis. This is a 1099 independent contractor role structured around our project pipeline: once onboarded, you'll be added to our roster of qualified coders and contacted as matching project work becomes available. Acceptance into the roster does not guarantee immediate or continuous assignment — placement depends on active client project needs, and contractors may experience periods without active work between projects.

This role is ideal for professionals with strong outpatient coding experience who want flexible, project-based work and are comfortable being on standby between engagements.

Responsibilities (when assigned to an active project)

  • Perform outpatient coding reviews and validation audits
  • Review medical record documentation to ensure coding accuracy and compliance
  • Identify coding discrepancies and provide clear rationales
  • Follow client-specific audit tools, workflows, and scorecards
  • Meet project productivity and quality expectations
  • Attend project kick-off calls, training sessions, and periodic team meetings as needed
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and data security standards
  • Submit completed work and time entries according to project requirements

Responsibilities (when not actively assigned)

  • Maintain access to client systems by logging in once a month

Required Qualifications

  • Completion and passing of the Revu Healthcare outpatient coding assessment
  • Active CPC certification (AAPC) — CPC-A not accepted
  • Minimum 5 years of outpatient coding experience
  • Prior coding audit or validation experience
  • Ability to commit to 15+ hours per week when actively assigned to a project
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • CPT coding guidelines
    • ICD-10-CM coding
    • Outpatient facility coding
  • Experience working in various EMR systems
  • Proficiency with:
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Microsoft Outlook
    • Excel
  • Strong written communication skills for audit rationales
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with outpatient ED coding reviews
  • Experience with Epic or Cerner
  • Prior consulting or contract coding experience
  • Familiarity with audit scorecards and QA processes
  • Specialization in Evaluation & Management (E/M) coding
  • Experience with surgical coding
  • Facility/technical coding experience

Additional Information

  • This is a remote, flexible, project-based independent contractor role. Successful applicants are added to Revu Healthcare's talent roster and contacted as project opportunities arise that match their qualifications.
  • There is no guarantee of a minimum number of hours, ongoing work, or a specific start date; assignment timing depends entirely on client project demand.
  • Contractors are permitted, but not required, to work weekends and after-hours (5:00 PM–9:00 AM ET) if it suits their schedule; work may be completed at any time within project deadlines.
  • Contractors must maintain their own equipment and secure internet connection.
  • All work must be performed in compliance with HIPAA and client confidentiality requirements.
