What is a remote materials science?

A Remote Materials Science job involves researching, analyzing, and developing materials while working remotely. Professionals in this field study the properties and applications of metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites, often using virtual simulations, data analysis tools, and remote lab access. They collaborate with teams via digital platforms, conduct experiments, and optimize materials for industries like aerospace, electronics, and healthcare. This role requires strong technical skills, self-motivation, and the ability to communicate findings effectively with remote teams.

What are the typical responsibilities of a remote materials science professional, and how does the remote aspect impact daily work?

As a Remote Materials Science professional, your daily tasks often include analyzing materials data, conducting research projects, running simulations, preparing technical reports, and collaborating with engineering or R&D teams via virtual meetings. The remote environment means you’ll rely heavily on digital collaboration tools for sharing results and coordinating experiments, and may need to be proactive in communicating with colleagues across time zones. While you may occasionally visit laboratories for hands-on testing, most work is completed independently from your home or a remote office. This setup allows for increased flexibility but also requires strong self-motivation and organizational skills to manage multiple projects efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the remote materials science position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Materials Science, you need a solid background in materials engineering or chemistry, data analysis, and scientific research, typically with at least a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with simulation software (such as MATLAB, COMSOL, or Materials Studio), laboratory data management tools, and possibly industry certifications can be highly beneficial. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills are essential for effective remote collaboration and project completion. These capabilities are crucial for contributing to innovative materials solutions and achieving research or product development goals in a remote setting.

Job description

We are a young startup with a bold vision to become the commerce and financial technology backbone of construction - one of the world's largest industries. Founded by serial entrepreneurs with exits to Fortune 500 companies (including Paypal), Field Materials has partnered with prominent VC funds in Silicon Valley to build a world class team with a mission to digitize and democratize construction material purchasing. This is a unique opportunity to join at the ground level an industry transforming company.

Our company is the people we hire. We aspire to build a team of smart, high-caliber players that inspire each other to excel yet are not afraid to leave egos behind, roll up their sleeves and fix what doesn't work. We don't believe in micromanagement and trust our team to take full ownership of their responsibilities. We believe in transparency as a way to build trust, break communication barriers, and align towards a common goal. Finally, we want our people to stay and grow with the company and the only way to achieve this is by providing them with above-market-rate compensation, premier benefits, and generous stock options.

We're looking for a Backend Engineer with experience building high-performance micro-services and APIs. This is the job for someone that cares about building large, scalable, performant production systems running on modern cloud infrastructure (AWS).

About you:

  • You are excited about startups and new products
  • You enjoy building systems from the ground up
  • You realize that products are built iteratively and specs evolve with customer feedback
  • You care about system and code design: well architected code is easier to understand, refactor, evolve, and inherit
  • You enjoy building highly scalable and low latency systems
  • You care about products that have massive economic impact and have interest in FinTech

What we look for:

  • BS (or higher) in Computer Science, related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2-5+ years of production level experience in Go, Java, Scala, or C++.
  • Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures and their real-world use cases.
  • Experience working with SQL databases
  • Experience with microservices, distributed systems, data serialization protocols (protobufs), stream processing (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis)
  • Experience with Go is a plus
  • Experience with GraphQL is a plus

Benefits

  • Flexible time off
  • Equity awards (after working for at least 3 month)
  • Gym reimbursement
  • Annual personal development fund
  • Swanky new work laptop
  • Work headphones reimbursement
  • Regular offsites at fun locations
Employment Type: FULL_TIME
