What is remote management?

Remote management refers to the process of overseeing teams, projects, or business operations from a location different than where the work is being performed. This typically involves using digital communication tools, project management software, and cloud-based technologies to coordinate tasks, monitor progress, and support team members who are working remotely. Remote managers focus on maintaining productivity, fostering team collaboration, and ensuring alignment with company goals, even when employees are geographically dispersed. This approach has become increasingly popular with the rise of remote and hybrid work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Management, you need strong leadership abilities, experience in team coordination, and a solid understanding of project or operational management principles, often supported by a relevant degree or managerial experience. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, Asana, and cloud-based project management software is essential, and certifications in project management (such as PMP or Agile) can be beneficial. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and cultural awareness are key soft skills for managing distributed teams effectively. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring productivity, engagement, and successful outcomes in a virtual work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote managers, and how can they effectively address them?

Remote managers often encounter challenges such as building team cohesion, maintaining clear communication, and ensuring accountability across distance. To address these obstacles, effective remote managers implement regular check-ins, utilize collaboration tools, and set clear expectations for deliverables and communication. Investing time in building trust and fostering an inclusive team culture also helps mitigate feelings of isolation among remote team members. Additionally, providing opportunities for professional development and feedback ensures that remote employees stay engaged and aligned with organizational goals.

Job description

Experienced Direct Sales Manager — Housing Provided

UPM Marketing | Cincinnati, Ohio

Full-Time | In Person

Performance-Based Compensation: $100,000–$350,000 Annual Earning Potential

UPM Marketing has recently opened our Cincinnati location, and we are looking for one experienced sales leader to step into a major management position and help build this office.

This is not an entry-level sales position, and this is not for someone who simply wants a manager title.

We are looking for a proven producer and team builder who knows how to recruit, train, coach, develop, and lead a direct sales organization.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You do not need experience in every campaign listed below.

Strong candidates should have proven sales and/or leadership experience in at least one of the following:

Deregulated energy

AT&T Fiber or telecommunications

Rooftop solar

Community solar

Door-to-door/direct sales

Field sales leadership

Similar high-performance commission sales environments

Personal sales experience is important, but this position goes beyond personal production.

We need someone who has actually built or managed a team.

Candidates should be prepared to discuss their previous sales production, recruiting results, leadership responsibilities, team size, and measurable results from previous positions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Proven direct sales experience

Previous experience recruiting, building, or managing a sales team

Strong communication and leadership ability

Reliable personal transportation is required

Must be able to successfully pass a background check

Must be comfortable working in both an office and field-sales environment

Must be able to provide a verifiable track record of sales and/or leadership performance

Must be dependable, accountable, professional, and comfortable being held to performance expectations

Applicants without reliable transportation will not meet the requirements of this position.

WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

You will be responsible for helping build and lead UPM Marketing’s Cincinnati sales operation.

Your responsibilities will include:

Recruiting and developing new sales representatives

Building your own sales team

Training and coaching representatives in the office and field

Managing daily team activity and production

Developing future leaders

Improving team sales performance and closing percentages

Maintaining professional and compliant field operations

Personally producing when necessary

Managing assigned campaigns and territories

Tracking team performance and reporting results to executive leadership

Building a consistent and accountable sales culture

Growing your team and increasing overall office revenue

We are not hiring someone to simply supervise people.

We are hiring a builder.

HOUSING PROVIDED

For the right candidate, company-provided housing is available as part of the position package.

The selected manager will have access to a private bedroom, giving them their own personal living space rather than a shared sleeping arrangement.

Housing availability and terms will be reviewed directly with qualified candidates during the interview and offer process.

YOUR OWN PRIVATE OFFICE

This is not a remote management position.

The manager selected for this opportunity will have a dedicated private office, personal desk, and professional workspace inside our new Cincinnati location.

We want the person in this position to be able to recruit, interview, train, coach, develop leaders, conduct meetings, and operate their team from a professional office environment.

This is an opportunity to have your own seat inside a growing operation and help build something from the ground up.

COMPENSATION

This is a performance-driven sales leadership opportunity.

Target annual earning potential: $100,000–$350,000, depending on individual production, team production, leadership performance, and the applicable compensation plan.

Compensation may include:

Personal sales commissions

Team overrides

Leadership compensation

Performance incentives

Advancement opportunities

Earnings are performance-based and are not guaranteed. Complete compensation details will be reviewed with qualified candidates during the interview and onboarding process.

For an experienced manager who knows how to recruit, build, lead, and produce at a high level, there is significant earning potential.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

We want to speak with you if you can truthfully say:

“I know how to sell.”

“I know how to recruit.”

“I know how to build a team.”

“I have managed salespeople before.”

“I know how to train and develop people.”

“I know how to hold a team accountable.”

“I can walk into a new market and build.”

“I have numbers and a track record that can support my experience.”

“I have reliable transportation.”

“I can pass a background check.”

We are especially interested in candidates who have previously worked as a:

Sales Manager

Field Sales Manager

Direct Sales Manager

Market Manager

Territory Manager

Team Leader

Sales Director

Solar Sales Manager

Energy Sales Manager

Telecommunications Sales Manager

WHO SHOULD NOT APPLY

This position is probably not the right fit if you:

Have never sold in a performance-based environment

Have never recruited or developed salespeople

Have no leadership track record

Do not have reliable transportation

Cannot complete the required background screening

Are looking strictly for a desk-management position

Are uncomfortable working directly with a field sales organization

Need someone else to build your team for you

UPM will provide the infrastructure, campaigns, leadership support, professional office environment, and opportunity.

You must bring the ability to recruit, lead, produce, build, and execute.

ABOUT UPM MARKETING

UPM Marketing is a growing direct marketing and sales organization operating across multiple customer-acquisition campaigns.

Our Cincinnati operation includes opportunities within industries such as:

Deregulated energy

AT&T and telecommunications

Our Cincinnati office is in a growth stage, which means the manager selected for this position will have an opportunity to help build the office, build the culture, build their team, and grow with the organization.

We are not looking for just another salesperson.

We are looking for someone who wants a seat, an office, a team, responsibility, leadership opportunity, housing availability, and the ability to build something substantial.

APPLICATION PROCESS

When applying, please submit your current résumé and make sure your experience clearly shows:

Previous direct sales experience

Industries or campaigns you have sold

Previous management or leadership positions

Approximate size of teams you have managed or built

Relevant sales or production achievements

Qualified candidates will move through an interview and selection process with UPM Marketing leadership.

Final candidates must successfully complete the company’s required onboarding and background screening process before placement into the position.
