Remote Localization Editor information

What is a remote localization editor?

A Remote Localization Editor is a professional who reviews, edits, and adapts written content to ensure it is culturally and linguistically appropriate for a specific target audience, all while working remotely. This role often involves editing translations, maintaining consistency in terminology, and ensuring the final product reads naturally in the target language. Remote Localization Editors must have strong linguistic skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with localization tools. They may work on various types of content, such as websites, apps, games, or marketing materials, for global markets.

How does a remote localization editor typically collaborate with translators and project managers in a virtual environment?

As a Remote Localization Editor, you will work closely with translators to review and refine translated content, ensuring linguistic accuracy and cultural relevance. Frequent communication with project managers is essential to clarify project requirements, address deadlines, and resolve any language-specific challenges. Collaboration usually takes place via project management platforms, video calls, and shared documents, fostering a team-oriented approach despite the remote setup. Being proactive in communication and feedback is key to maintaining high-quality localization outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote localization editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Localization Editor, you need expertise in language translation, editing, and cultural adaptation, often supported by a degree in linguistics or a related field. Familiarity with CAT tools (like SDL Trados or MemoQ), QA systems, and style guides is typically required. Outstanding attention to detail, time management, and cross-cultural communication skills make someone stand out in this position. These abilities ensure translated content is accurate, culturally relevant, and delivered efficiently for global audiences.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an International Creative Writer with Swedish based in Netherlands.

This is a freelance creative writing opportunity focused on shaping engaging dialogues for an advanced virtual assistant.
You'll create and refine conversational content that feels natural, culturally relevant, and authentic to Swedish-speaking users.
The role combines creativity, editorial judgment, localization, and awareness of current events and cultural trends.
You'll help develop a distinctive and recognizable virtual assistant personality while maintaining consistency with global guidelines.
Your work will contribute directly to the quality, relevance, and personality of conversational experiences used internationally.
You'll collaborate with other writers, review their contributions, and adapt English-language content into natural Swedish.
With approximately 12 hours per week, this role offers experienced or emerging writers the flexibility to contribute to an innovative technology project.

Accountabilities
  • Write and edit creative dialogue for a virtual assistant based on trending topics, cultural events, popular festivities, and other relevant information.
  • Refresh, refine, and improve existing dialogue to maintain engaging, natural, and up-to-date conversational experiences.
  • Develop the virtual assistant as a distinct and recognizable character in Swedish while maintaining consistency with global personality and editorial guidelines.
  • Review dialogue suggestions created by other writers and provide thoughtful editorial input.
  • Translate and culturally adapt dialogue from English into fluent, natural Swedish, ensuring that meaning, tone, and personality are preserved.
  • Perform editorial quality assurance on conversational responses to identify inconsistencies, errors, or opportunities for improvement.
  • Embed approved dialogue content into XML files using proprietary content tools, with training provided as needed.
  • Stay informed about current events, cultural developments, and topics that can inspire relevant and engaging conversational content.
  • Incorporate constructive feedback and continuously refine writing approaches to improve the quality of the overall experience.
Requirements
  • Native or near-native Swedish language proficiency with strong written communication skills.
  • Strong creative writing, editing, and localization abilities, with the capacity to produce natural and engaging dialogue.
  • Strong critical reading and analytical thinking skills, with excellent attention to tone, context, consistency, and detail.
  • Genuine interest in current events, cultural trends, and a broad range of topics.
  • Ability to understand and adapt content for cultural and linguistic relevance rather than relying on literal translation.
  • Self-motivated and proactive approach, with the ability to work independently and manage assignments autonomously.
  • Resilience and openness to constructive feedback, with a willingness to revise and improve work based on editorial guidance.
  • Growth mindset and enthusiasm for learning new processes, technologies, and content tools.
  • Willingness and ability to learn proprietary tooling for embedding dialogue into XML files.
  • Strong ability to collaborate with other writers and contribute constructively to shared editorial standards.
  • Previous professional writing, localization, translation, editorial, or conversational AI experience is helpful but not explicitly required.
Benefits
  • Freelance contract with approximately 12 hours of availability per week.
  • Fully remote working arrangement.
  • Flexible part-time workload suitable for freelance professionals.
  • Hourly compensation.
  • Opportunity to contribute to an innovative virtual assistant and conversational technology project.
  • Exposure to international localization and internationalization workflows.
  • Training provided for the proprietary tooling required for the role.
  • Opportunity to develop experience in creative dialogue writing, localization, and AI-powered conversational experiences.
