Job description

At Allstate, great things happen when our people work together to protect families and their belongings from life’s uncertainties. And for more than 90 years, our innovative drive has kept us a step ahead of our customers’ evolving needs. From advocating for seat belts, air bags and graduated driving laws, to being an industry leader in pricing sophistication, telematics, and, more recently, device and identity protection.

Job Description

Join the legal frontline and champion the defense for both the insured and Allstate in Western Michigan. As a Senior Trial Attorney, you will independently manage a litigation heavy caseload focused on bodily injury, auto liability, and premises liability matters. This role involves frequent court advocacy, along with mediations, motion practice, depositions, and strategic case management. Beyond active litigation, you’ll serve as a trusted legal advisor to business partners and help provide continuity and stability amid a growing and evolving team. This is an opportunity for an experienced Michigan litigator who is comfortable operating autonomously while remaining connected to a collaborative legal organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represents insured individuals and Allstate in the defense of bodily injury, auto liability, and premises liability lawsuits, including Personal Injury Protection, dog bite, and slip‑and‑fall matters.
  • Independently manages an active litigation docket, with a strong emphasis on motion practice and court advocacy.
  • Prepares thoroughly for and conducts hearings, mediations, arbitrations, depositions, and occasional trials.
  • Drafts and argues pre‑trial and post‑trial motions and other substantive legal pleadings.
  • Appears before the court frequently.
  • Provides practical day‑to‑day legal counsel to internal business partners and claims professionals.
  • Collaborates effectively with paralegals, administrative staff, and leadership while operating largely independently as the sole attorney supporting the region.
  • Maintains awareness of applicable Michigan statutes, regulations, and case law; evaluates legal developments; and provides guidance on their impact to claims and business teams.

Education

  • Juris Doctorate
  • Active membership in good standing with the Michigan State Bar required.

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years of Michigan litigation experience with demonstrated ability to independently manage cases from inception through resolution.
  • Strong background in insurance defense, bodily injury, auto liability, or premises liability matters preferred.
  • Proven courtroom advocacy skills; comfort appearing before courts on a regular basis.
  • Solid experience with depositions, motion practice, and litigation strategy development.
  • Ability to manage a litigation‑focused caseload with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, legal research platforms (LexisNexis preferred), and virtual court technology.
  • Comfortable working in a fully remote environment while supporting courts in Western Michigan.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within Michigan.

Location

  • This role supports the Grand Rapids, MI region and surrounding counties (Kent, Barry, Allegan, Muskegon). Candidates must reside within reasonable proximity to the region.
