Job description

SUMMARY 

Mortenson is currently seeking a Lean Engineer that will support our Battery Energy Storage group's project teams with applying Mortenson's kaizen-based continuous improvement approach, as well as 5S and Flow Construction, to enhance work safety, streamline processes, and improve project outcomes. 

This position is 50% remote, 50% travel

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Partner closely with project leadership and craft workforce to establish trust and gain buy-in for lean approaches 

  • Provide regular feedback to project leadership and the group lean leader on lean approaches and cross-project sharing 

  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels 

  • Support continuous improvement efforts onsite 

  • Coordinate and facilitate improvement events with project team and experts 

  • Reinforce continuous improvement principles and ensure ongoing application of tools 

  • Support forepersons in observing work, assessing adherence to standardized work, and addressing abnormalities 

  • Encourage crews to brainstorm and implement ongoing improvements 

  • Support project team, field leaders, and trade partners in applying 5S practices 

  • Communicate 5S standards during onboarding of new workforce and trade partners 

  • Create plans and resources to achieve 5S standards 

  • Support flow and work management onsite 

  • Participate in flow schedule development for work phases 

  • Support superintendents and forepersons in daily planning, work management, and learning approaches 

  • Promote one-piece flow for self-perform work and reduce batching practices 

  • All other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Engineering, or related degree 

OR 

  • Equivalent combination of education and technical/field experience demonstrated over multiple years of related work experience 

  • Internship experience in construction or manufacturing 

  • Prior experience on construction job sites preferred 

  • Current driver's license 

  • Solid understanding of continuous improvement principles and their application 

  • Excellent reliability and follow-through on commitments 

  • Effective trainer and facilitator 

  • Ability to influence through relationship building 

  • Proactive self-starter with a growth mindset 

  • Strong sense of curiosity and optimism 

  • Effectively work with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels 

  • Active listening and effective communication skills, open to diverse input and feedback 

  • Ability to travel up to 75%

The base pay range for this role is $78,800 - $98,500. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%). 

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.  This position is eligible for Mortenson's incentive plan.
