ABOUT THE FIRM
W.E. Stevens, P.C. is a 13-person CPA firm in Omaha, Nebraska with a reputation for doing serious accounting work without the noise of a large firm. We serve a diverse client base, closely held businesses, S-corporations, partnerships, high-net-worth individuals, and nonprofits across tax preparation, advisory, and accounting services. Our team is small enough that everyone knows every client, and senior enough that you will never be handed work that should belong to a partner.
We are growing deliberately. This is not a backfill hire, it is a role we are adding because the work warrants it and we want someone who will grow with the firm over the long term.
THE ROLE
You will carry your own portfolio of business and individual clients from engagement through delivery — tax preparation, write-up, compiled financials, planning conversations, and the client relationships that tie them together. You will work directly with partners and the firm manager with no unnecessary layers between you and the decisions that affect your clients.
This role is fully remote. We have built the infrastructure and the culture to support it. The expectation is professional-grade independence.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Prepare and review complex tax returns across entity types
Individual (1040), S-corporation (1120-S), partnership (1065), C-corporation (1120), trust (1041), and nonprofit (990)
Manage month-end and quarter-end write-up and bookkeeping engagements for business clients (cash and accrual basis)
Prepare compiled financial statements in accordance with applicable professional standards
Lead client relationships for your portfolio status updates, planning conversations, open item follow-up
Research complex tax and accounting issues; document conclusions and communicate recommendations clearly
Support tax planning engagements for business owners: entity structure, retirement, year-end strategies
Review and mentor junior staff work; provide constructive, specific feedback
Ensure all engagements meet quality standards and deadlines without partner intervention on routine matters
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
Required
Active CPA license, this is a hard requirement
7 or more years of public accounting experience, with meaningful time in tax preparation and client-facing roles
Demonstrated ability to prepare complex individual and business returns independently
Hands-on experience with accrual and cash basis bookkeeping and write-up
Proficiency in CCH Axcess Tax, UltraTax, or Lacerte and QuickBooks Online or Desktop
Track record of managing your own client relationships and deadlines remotely
Clear written and verbal communicator with clients and with colleagues
Meaningful advantages (not required)
IRS representation / Circular 230 experience
Experience with compiled or reviewed financial statement engagements under SSARS
SurePrep, SureBinder, or similar workflow tools
Nonprofit or trust return experience (990, 1041)
Prior experience in a small or mid-sized public accounting firm (under 30 people)

✓ 100% remote, work from anywhere in the U.S.
✓ Health insurance
✓ Flexible scheduling around client deadlines
✓ 401(k) with firm match
✓ Direct access to partners — no bureaucratic layers
✓ Paid time off and firm holidays
✓ Variety of work across industries and entity types
✓ CPE fully covered, hours and fees
✓ Stable, established firm with long-term client relationships
WHY THIS ROLE, HONESTLY
A lot of senior CPA postings describe autonomy and then deliver a rigid review process with four layers between the preparer and the partner. We are a 13-person firm. There is no room for that, and no interest in it. You will have real relationships with real clients, prepare returns that require real judgment, and be involved in the conversations that matter to those clients, not just the compliance of deliverables.
If you are at a large firm and doing good work that no one outside your office knows about, or at a smaller firm that has stopped investing in its people, this is worth a conversation.
HOW TO APPLY
Submit your resume and a short cover letter two to three paragraphs describing your public accounting background, the types of returns you prepare most frequently, and one client situation that required you to go beyond the compliance work to give genuinely useful advice. Applications without a cover letter will not be reviewed.
